UNILAG expels 125 students over forged results, exam malpractice

UNILAG Kazeem Ugbodaga The authorities of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, has expelled 125 students for using forged results to gain admission into the school. The school also rusticated 73 other students over examination misconduct. The students were rusticated for between one and four semesters for engaging in examination misconducts. The information is contained in the school’s website, UNILAG.edu.ng. Out of the 125 students expelled, 120 of them had forged certificates while five others due to examination misconduct. Kwara APC suspends party chieftain

APC The Kwara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended the party’s Chairman in Ilorin West Local Government Area, Alhaji Suleiman Balah. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulaiman Buhari, made this public in a statement on Saturday in Ilorin. He said the suspension became inevitable owing to Balah’s deliberate insubordination and wilful sabotage of lawful party directive. The suspension order, he said, takes immediate effect. He said the next ranking officer of the party had been directed to take over the leadership of the party in the local government. Buhari urged members of the APC in the state to be steadfast and rededicate themselves to the party’s good ideals and leadership.

I Div. emerges champions of 2016 Nigerian Army Sports Festival

The 1 Division, who were the defending champions, clinched 45 gold, 32 silver and 41 bronze medals, to beat the Army Headquarters Garrison (AHQG) to the second spot with 103 medals. The 103 medals are made up of 32 gold, 31 silver and 40 bronze. The 81 Division came third with a total of 94 medals comprising 31 gold, 26 silver and 37 bronze medals. Eberechi-Nyesom-Wike Eberechi Nyesom-Wike, the wife of Rivers’ Gov. Nyesom Wike, on Saturday lauded a former Chief Judge of the state, Daisy Okocha, for her contributions towards golf’s development in the state. A statement by Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, quoted Nyesom-Wike as also commending Okocha for her contributions to the growth of the game nationally . Ooni Ogunwusi with the Aare crown The ‎Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, put on the sacred Aare crown on Saturday in Ile-Ife, Osun, for the first time amidst jubilations and local gun salute by the natives. Oba Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, performed the symbolic trip from Ile Oodua, his palace to Oke Mogun shrine, to mark this year’s Olojo Festival, being the first time he would participate in the festival as Ooni. Olojo Festival holds annually in Ile Ife to mark creation of the universe and “Are crown” a special crown made of 151 items. A suicide bomber killed by troops Vigilant troops of Operation Lafiya Dole on Saturday intercepted and neutralized a male suicide bomber at Madagali in Adamawa. Col. Sani Usman, the acting Director, Army Public Relations said in a statement that the incident occurred in the morning along Madagali-Limankara road. According to him, the suicide bomber was spotted by a vigilant duty sentry, attempting to infiltrate troops’ forward defensive line along Madagali-Limankara road. “He was gunned down by the vigilant sentry as he failed to stop when halted. “The accurate shot also detonated the Improvised Explosive Device vest and he was blown into pieces,” Usman said.

Jean Alexander Jean Alexander, who played Coronation Street’s Hilda Ogden and Auntie Wainwright in Last of the Summer Wine, has died aged 90. US announces $12 million assistance for Hurricane Matthew response

US President Barack Obama The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced more than $12 million in additional humanitarian assistance to help communities affected by Hurricane Matthew. With this funding, the United States is providing nearly $14 million for immediate Hurricane Matthew relief efforts in Haiti, Jamaica, and The Bahamas. The funding, according to USAID will provide critical food assistance and relief supplies to hard-hit areas in Haiti’s southwestern peninsula, as well as transportation and logistics support to help USAID’s United Nations and non-governmental organizations partners reach communities in the Grand’ Anse and Sud regions. Scene of the attack in Iraq At least 32 people have died in a suicide attack targeting Shia in Iraq’s capital Baghdad, officials say. More than 60 were injured in the blast, carried out on a tent in a crowded market in a northern district of the city. So-called Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack. Many Shia pilgrims are taking part in mourning rituals commemorating the killing of the Prophet Mohammed’s grandson, Hussein, in the 7th Century. Wizkid Dumps L.A.X From His Label, Starboy Record

Starboy chief, Wizkid has parted ways with his protege, L.A.X after he didn’t renew his contract with the label upon expiry. Back in August 2013, Wizkid had announced on twitter that he signed L.A.X to his Starboy Records. NSCDC operatives The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ondo has refuted allegations that it is training thugs for People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the forthcoming governorship election. In a statement in New York, he, however, expressed deep concern about the safety and well-being of the remaining schoolgirls and other victims of abduction by Boko Haram, who are still in captivity. The Secretary-General urged the international community to continue supporting the government of Nigeria in its efforts to secure their release, rehabilitation and reintegration. He called for increased efforts to ensure additional humanitarian access in the north-east of Nigeria and reiterates the continued commitment of the United Nations in this regard. Some of the 21 Chibok schoolgirls released on Thursday President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed optimism on the release of more of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls, after 21 of them were freed by Boko Haram, following more than two years of captivity. Buhari spoke at a joint press conference with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday in Berlin. He said negotiations would continue until all the girls secure their freedom. “On the Chibok girls, we have been able to secure the release of 21 of them, so over 100 more are still in the hands of the terrorists somewhere in the Lake Chad Basin area which include Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria. “In getting this 21 out, we hope we will get enough intelligence to go about securing the rest of them,” the president said, according to a statement by Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity.
