Happy New ‘Happy New Year!’

In spite of everything though, it was good fun. It’s very uplifting to know that friends and family wish you well, sometimes several times over. That’s partly what the season was about. Even now, there is still a trickle arriving; a sort of afters. I am not about to add to the pile off goodwill messages you’ve received in the past month. That would be very inconsiderate, unless you are an insatiable social media consumer. I know it because I am just emerging from under a tonne of them myself. You may then wonder at my choice of title. But regard it again, very carefully. You’ll find I am not wishing you a ‘Happy New Year.’ I probably have already anyway, even though we might have never met and our paths may never cross. So rise above the overdose and regard the title again. I am simply asking you to be happy at the new tech-driven proliferation of Season’s Greetings around you, and the power it has placed in your palm to send whatever gifts you like to as many people you want. The PDP chieftain who disclosed this during an interview recently, described the experience as another story of his entirely life, adding that some lessons were learnt. ”My Kirikiri experience is another story of my life entirely; I learnt some lessons. God didn’t say we won’t have tribulations, trials and temptations, but if you trust in Him, all will be well. I preach that now at every opportunity I have, even to politicians. I have been there and what is encouraging. Nelson Mandela, in the last book he wrote, said the prison cell is the first place for you to re-examine yourself and rededicate yourself; to recommit yourself to the service of mankind and to God. There is nothing as encouraging as that. Chief Awolowo also went to jail for committing nothing. ”When we came out a

Husband, wife Olympic medalists retire

The Eatons retire Husband-and-wife Olympic medalists Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen-Eaton have retired, both at the age of 28. American decathlon world record holder Eaton, who successfully defended his Olympic title in Rio, said he wanted to “try something new”. “Frankly there isn’t much more I want to do in sport,” he said. Canadian heptathlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton won bronze in Rio and was runner-up to Jessica Ennis-Hill at the 2015 World Championships. “I no longer have the passion for track and field or the heptathlon that I used to because I know I can’t advance any further in the sport,” she said in a statement alongside her husband’s on their joint website. Eaton broke his own world record in Beijing in August 2015 when he accumulated 9,045 points to pick up his second World Championships gold. NNPC awards crude oil contracts to 39 companies

Nigeria’s oil drill The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has awarded its crude oil contracts to 39 companies for 2017. Almost half of the firms are Nigerian but international winners included China’s Sinopec, British Petroleum (BP) and France’s Total. The contracts cover around 1.3 million barrels of oils produced a day. By announcing the winners, the state-owned oil company said it was seeking greater transparency when it comes to awarding contracts. BBC reports that previous deals have been shrouded in secrecy leading to accusations of widespread corruption. At current oil prices, the contracts for more than half of Nigeria’s oil production are worth more than $70m (£57m) a day. Oil sales are crucially important for the government, accounting for around two thirds of its revenue. But they also generate American dollars, which are vital to the health of the overall economy suffering from its worst crisis in decades. Nigeria’s production normally tops two million

Mega Party: Tinubu can’t leave APC- Momoh

Prince Tony Momoh Former Minister of Information and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Tony Momoh has come to the defence of the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, saying that the ex-Lagos governor will never leave the APC for any proposed mega party ahead of the 2019 general elections. Momoh, who described the mega party as a storm in a tea cup, added that he was unsure whether former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would remain in APC based on his past political antecedents. Speaking on plans by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) championing the mega party drive, Momoh said the PDP having lost the centre could only collapse and would not rise again to form a mega party. According to him, “those mentioning Tinubu’s name don’t know what they are saying. They don’t know Tinubu at all. I cannot defend former Vice- President Atiku Abubakar for the simple reason that he has been in PDP, AC, he went back to PDP and now in APC”. “So

He was responding to Jammeh, who said Saturday that a decision of the Economic Community of West African States to send troops to ensure a peaceful transition of power was a “declaration of war” and called for a fresh poll. “It should be crystal clear that filing an election petition is the private matter of a loser in an election. Israeli soldier convicted over Hebron death

An Israeli soldier filmed shooting dead a wounded Palestinian attacker after he had been disarmed of a knife has been convicted of manslaughter. Sgt Elor Azaria, 20, shot Abdul Fatah al-Sharif, 21, in the head while he was lying immobile on a road. The incident happened in Hebron in the occupied West Bank last March, after another soldier was stabbed. Sgt Azaria said he thought Sharif might have an explosive vest, but prosecutors said his motive was revenge. The high-profile trial has proven extremely divisive in Israel, says the BBC’s Yolande Knell in Tel Aviv. There have been rallies to support the soldier and some senior politicians backed Sgt Azaria. However, top military figures were quick to say that his actions did not reflect the values of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). In the incident on 24 March, Sharif and another 21-year-old Palestinian, Ramzi Aziz al-Qasrawi, stabbed and wounded an Israeli soldier before troops opened fire on them, wounding Sharif and killing Qasra

Recession: Surviving the years of lean cows

Nigeria’s recession, our own years of lean cows, is characterised by very high inflation, declining real wages and accelerating unemployment and underemployment. It manifests on businesses in three ways, which are the massive contraction of market demand, rationalisation of demand and the trade–down of market and product preferences as consumers shop for value. There are nine ways a business can respond to recession and pull through this challenging period. “and the cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek, fat cows.” – Genesis 41:4 “and the thin heads of grain swallowed the seven healthy, full heads.” – Genesis 41: 7 This article discusses what businesses can do to pull through the years of recession. The years of lean cows are the years of famine akin to the years of economic recession. When Pharaoh dreamt, in biblical history, Egypt mobilised to prepare for famine or economic recession by building strong national reserves of grains in its years of boom and abundance.
