Solomon Dalung, Minister of Youth and Sports The Nigerian U-23 team at the Olympics holding in Brazil has warned the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung to stay away from the team. The players whose next match puts them up against Germany in the Semi-Finals of the competition described the Sports Minister as a distraction to the team and hence his visit to the camp is unnecessary. Zambia police arrest opposition protesters

Zambia police have arrested some people protesting against the re-election of President Edgar Lungu after his main opponent Hakainde Hichilema said the vote was rigged. Godwin Phiri, a Senior Police Officer said in Lusaka on Tuesday that 133 protesters were arrested because they targeted perceived supporters of the ruling party and destroyed their property. “It is like this was well planned and they were just waiting for the winner to be declared. Calm has now returned following the arrests”, he said. Lungu scraped home on Monday in a tight contest to rule over Africa’s second-largest copper producer which has suffered an economic slump due to depressed commodity prices. Governor Kashim Shettima The Borno Head of Service, Malam Bukar Yakubu, says the state government will only pay salaries to workers whose biometric data have been duly captured. Yakubu disclosed this to journalists on Tuesday in Maiduguri. Joao Havelange Former Fifa president Joao Havelange has died at the age of 100. The Brazilian was predecessor to Sepp Blatter at world football’s governing body, serving from 1974 to 1998. He resigned as Fifa’s honorary president in April 2013 following an investigation into bribery allegations and was admitted to hospital the following year with a lung infection. He was an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member from 1963 until 2011, resigning because of ill health. Havelange represented Brazil in swimming at the 1936 Olympics – the year he qualified as a lawyer – before his election to the IOC. As Fifa president he led the World Cup’s expansion from 16 to 32 teams, with six competitions held under his tenure.

Electrician docked for stealing rechargeable fans

A 34-year-old electrician, Musa Ajimoh, was on Tuesday brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing two sets of rechargeable fans worth N30,000. The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a one-count charge of stealing. The Prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Uko told the court that the accused committed the crime at Noble Plaza on Joseph Dosu Way, Badagry. The stolen item was owned by the complainant, Mrs. Bukola Alao. “The accused just walked into the shop, picked up the rechargeable fans and walked out, like nothing was wrong,” he said. The prosecutor noted that the offence committed was punishable under Section 285 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. ECOWAS to reach common external tariff from January 2017

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has decided to reach effective application of the common external tariff from Jan. 1, 2017 by the whole of its 15 member states. A release stated that the decision was reached on Monday night in Cotonou. It noted that the decision had become imperative as only nine member states apply the common external tariff that came into force in January 2015. The ECOWAS common external tariff launched during a meeting of head of states and governments in December 2014 in Abuja, Nigeria, was adopted in January 2006. “The completion of the common external tariff will be a milestone in the establishment of a customs union as part of ECOWAS’s integration programme. The release said that it underscored that the success of the West-African integration depends on the creation of a common market through the liberalisation of trade and the adoption of a common external tariff. Robbers attack CBN bullion vans, kill 2 policemen

Bullion van Armed robbers have attacked a convoy of bullion vans belonging to the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and killed two policemen in the process at Hawan Kibo, along Jos – Abuja road on Tuesday. Punch reports that the bullion vans and their retinue of armed mobile policemen escorts had left Jos in the early hours of Tuesday enroute Abuja. Augie, who gave the beak down of the activities carried out by the group during the period, said 12 abandoned babies were recovered during the period under review. “We found the 12 dumped babies alive and took them to orphanage for care and upbringing while 31 women with unlawful pregnancies were counselled and assisted to undergo safe delivery.” The director disclosed on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi that the committee had also recovered three unidentified corpses and handed them over to the police for investigation and necessary action. Troops rescue 88, kill 3 insurgents in Bama, Borno

Col-Sani-Kukasheka-Usman Troops on clearance operations in the North-East have rescued 88 people in Bama Local Government Area of Borno and killed three during an encounter. A statement signed by Col. Sani Usman, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, in Abuja on Tuesday, said 28 people of those rescued, claimed they escaped from Bula Musa village.
