Judge chides Ecobank’s counsel for disrupting court proceedings

There was drama at the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos today when senior members of the bar accused Ecobank’s lawyer, A. O. Ogunba, SAN of disrespecting the bench in the matter between Honeywell Group and Ecobank. It will be recalled that on 16th October, 2015, Ecobank, through A.O. Ogunba, SAN, sought ex parte orders against Honeywell before Justice Tsoho. When Justice Tsoho refused to grant the orders, Ogunba on the same day went to Justice Yunusa J. to seek that he grants the ex parte orders. Ogunba later succeeded in procuring the ex parte orders from Justice Yunusa; who is currently answering allegation of corruption before the National Judicial Council Ogunba made a huge scene by accusing the judge of nodding his head while listening to the oral argument of counsel to Honeywell. Lagos Govt. demolishes 45 shanties at Iba

A Lagos shanty The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) on Thursday demolished 45 shanties at LASU round-about in Iba area of Lagos A statement issued on Thursday in Lagos by Mr Adebayo Taofiq, the Public Affairs Officer of the unit, said demolition notices were served on occupants of the shanties on May 2 to remove their goods and possessions. It said that the Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, had decried the traffic gridlock on the road due to the shanties. Abuja workers cry out over transporters’ strike

BRT buses in Lagos Some commuters in the Federal Capital Territory are groaning under the indefinite strike embarked upon mass transport workers. Junior workers of the Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company (AUMTCO) on Wednesday commenced industrial action to press for better condition of service. They are also demanding for the payment of their two months outstanding salaries. Mr Patrick Ogun, a civil servant who resides in Kubwa, complained that the strike had created some difficulty in commuting to and from work. “The strike by AUMTCO workers is really taking its toll on the common man and I appeal to the authorities concerned to take steps to end it as soon as practicable. “The mass transport buses are more affordable and more convenient to commute in and a lot of low income earners depend on them,’’ he said. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Seventeen people have so far been confirmed dead when a bus fell off a bridge into a dry river bed in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh on Thursday. The bus driver lost control as he tried to avoid a head-on collision with a motorcycle and the vehicle fell off a small bridge in Balrampur district. The officers, Sadanand Kumar who was on patrol said that fourteen people and two motorbike rider died on the spot while more than 50 injured later succumbed to their injuries. “All the victims were men. “The bus was travelling from a town in neighbouring Jharkhand state to Chhattisgarh capital Raipur. “The accident took place near Daldhowa in Balrampur district, about 400 kilometres north-west of Raipur,’’ he said. In a statement signed by the Director, Media and Publicity of the institution, Malam Ibrahim Sheme, NOUN said it had decided to grant 100 per cent waiver to prison inmates who desired to further their education across the country. Sheme said that the development was in keeping with the institution’s mandate of making education accessible to the less privileged in the society. He quoted the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdalla Adamu, as announcing the grant while receiving his counterpart from the Nigeria/Turkish Nile University, Prof. Huseyin Sert, in Abuja. Police drivers to pay for damaged patrol vans

Ogun state: Patrol vehicles to the police Police drivers of damaged patrol vehicles will henceforth pay the cost for the repair. The police on Thursday said it would compel officers and men of the force, who damaged patrol vehicles through reckless driving to pay for the damage. The Zone 2 police spokesman, CSP Adebowale Lawal, disclosed this in Lagos. Lawal said that the directive was issued by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the zone, comprising of Lagos and Ogun State Commands, Mr Bala Hassan. Lagos State officials set to destroy a gated street The Lagos State Government says it has demolished 84 street gates which were shut against motorists before the 12 midnight deadline stipulated time. The Lagos State Government, in a bid to resolve traffic gridlock in the metropolis ordered all street gates to be opened till 12 midnight of each day so that motorists could drive through them in a bid to decongest traffic in the state. The court’s president, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, in his judgment, said the court was convinced that the estranged couple was tired of the union, as all efforts to reconcile them had failed. “Since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage, this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage. “The marriage between Mr Azeez Ige and Mrs Bola Ige is hereby dissolved from today. “Both parties are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation.” Omilola ruled. TSA has reduced fraud in aviation sector

Victor Eyaru, NATCA President The Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) on Thursday commended the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration for implementing the Treasury Single Account (TSA) in the aviation sector. NATCA’s president, Mr Victor Eyaru, gave the commendation while speaking with NAN in Lagos. Eyaru said the introduction of the TSA had helped to reduce fraudulent activities and restored sanity to the sector. NLC tells C/River govt to employ 300 nurses

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross Rivers The Cross River chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Thursday advised the state government to recruit at least 200 nurses and 100 midwives, to enhance healthcare services. Mr John Ushie, the NLC’s Chairman in the state gave the advice in an interview with NAN in Calabar. Ushie said that the recruitment would help bridge the gap in the sector, which was caused by retirement and resignation of seasoned nurses and midwives. “The NLC in the state is appealing to the state governor to approve the recruitment of at least 200 nurses and midwives for the state and about 100 nurses for the 18 local government areas. “NLC also appeal for the grant of in-service training to nurses who opt for post basic studies in special and critical areas where manpower is lacking,” he said. N350 tomato now sells for N3,500

The prices of tomatoes have gone up by 1,000 per cent in Jos and environs in Plateau, a market survey by NAN has shown. Our correspondents, who visited some of the markets and other selling points on Thursday, found out that the commodity had gone beyond the reach of the average Nigerian. At the Terminus Market in Jos, a small basket of the commodity, which used to be N350, was selling for N3,500. NAN also found that a big basket of the commodity, which sold for N1,000 about two months ago, now costs N10,000. The story was the same at the Tudun Wada Market in Jos North Local Government, where a medium basket of the commodity, which sold for N550 in March, was sold for N5,600. NAN reports that prospective small buyers seeking N150 worth of the commodity, were turned back by the retailers, who said that they did not have any quantity for that little amount. Operation Crackdown: Nigerian troops under fierce attack from Boko Haram

Ademola Adeniji Adele, former Commissioner of Sports Former Lagos State Commissioner, Ademola Adeniji Adele has died early Thursday in India. Family sources say that former Commissioner of Sports during the government of Babatunde Raji Fashola died at the age of 60 after a successful surgery. The politician was said to have travelled to India early this year because of an undisclosed ailment. Prior to his death, Adele had relocated from his Festac residence to Badagry where he was rearing cattle. Family sources however revealed that Adele will be flown from India to Nigeria on Friday. He will be buried on Saturday at his residence in Festac, Lagos state. Reacting to the news, Nigeria Football Federation said it was shocked at the demise of the late Adele. 4 innocent mothers, babies set free from prison

Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Mahmud Mohammed Four innocent mothers with their babies dumped into prison by the authorities have been set free from the Umuahia federal prison. The women who had no case files against were set free by the Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Theresa Uzokwe, during a visit to the prison. Uzokwe also ordered the release of two male inmates. According to her, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) had no case file against the four female inmates since they were remanded in custody. Late President Yar’Adua Six years after the death of Nigeria’s former president, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua citizens of the most populous black nation have taken to social media to pay glowing tribute to the soft-spoken president whose term as number one citizen was truncated by illness. It would be recalled that Yar’Adua left Nigeria for pericarditis treatment at a clinic in Saudi Arabia. But returned to Nigeria after rumours that he was dead.
