The Portugal forward opened the scoring with a deflected free-kick which wrong-footed Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Ronaldo added a second from the penalty spot before he completed his treble when he tapped in Gareth Bale’s cross. Real now have a four-point lead over second-placed Barcelona who were held to a goalless draw by Malaga earlier. Ronaldo has scored eight La Liga goals for the European champions this season, to draw level with Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. The 31-year-old’s treble also saw him go one goal of clear of legendary Real forward Alfredo Di Stefano’s individual total of 18 goals in the Madrid derby.

Ibrahim said that out of the 28 suspects, 10 were students of Osadenis Grammar School, Asaba. The CP said the suspected cultists, aged between 13 and 16 years old, were rounded up during school hours, following intelligence reports from members of the public. “These are children, who were sent to school to study but regrettably, they form cult group to terrorise their fellow students and the entire school. “They call themselves the ‘Future Trigger Boys’. The statement was made available to newsmen on Saturday in Abuja. The Court of Appeal panel led by Justice Ibrahim Salauwa on Friday reserved judgment on the appeal challenging the ruling of Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court recognising Jimoh Ibrahim as PDP candidate for the Ondo State guber poll. Adeyeye said that the call was important as INEC, Makarfi and Eyitayo Jegede the faction’s candidate in the election were all party to the suit. “We make this call against the backdrop of the fact that

Barcelona held to goalless draw at home to 9-man Malaga

Neymar Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by Malaga in La Liga as they missed the presence of influential forwards Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. Suarez was suspended for the stalemate at the Nou Camp and Messi missed out following a bout of illness. Gerard Pique put the ball in the net for Barca but it was flagged for offside while Andre Gomes hit a post. Malaga finished the match with nine men after Diego Llorente and Juan Carlos were both shown red cards. Llorente was sent off for a late tackle on Neymar in the 69th minute while Carlos was dismissed for dissent in injury time. Barcelona monopolised possession in the contest and had 28 attempts at goal but struggled to break down a resolute Malaga defence. Barca centre-back Pique, who was thrown up front in the final 10 minutes as Luis Enrique’s side adopted a more direct approach, saw a late penalty appeal turned down by the referee. Malaga’s best chance came just before the hour mark when Carlos rounded Barcelona goalke

Leicester lose 2-1 to Watford

Riyad Mahrez Watford scored inside the opening 33 seconds as they defeated champions Leicester at Vicarage Road. Etienne Capoue volleyed the Hornets into the lead – their fastest Premier League goal – before Roberto Pereyra curled in a second after 12 minutes. Leicester pulled one back when Riyad Mahrez converted a penalty after Miguel Britos’ clumsy foul on Jamie Vardy. But the Foxes could not score again and remain without an away league victory this season. Leicester become only the third reigning top-flight champions, after Leeds in 1992 and Blackburn in 1995, to start a Premier League season without a win from their opening six away games. Watford had been embarrassed 6-1 at Liverpool in their last match and boss Walter Mazzarri demanded an improved performance. But even he could not have expected the blistering start they made as they went ahead in the opening minute. Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater, who had missed England’s matches against Scotland and Spain with

Anichebe scores a brace in Sunderland’s 3-0 victory

Victor Anichebe Jermain Defoe scored his 150th Premier League goal as Sunderland comfortably beat Hull City to secure consecutive top-flight wins for the first time since May. Defoe’s darting run and firm low finish made him just the eighth player in Premier League history to bring up the milestone, in a first half that otherwise was a positive one for the visitors. The in-form Victor Anichebe scored twice after the break for David Moyes’ rejuvenated side, who remain inside the bottom three but are at least off the foot of the standings, replaced by Swansea. Advertisement Hull had their chances and looked good going forward, but in Jordan Pickford they found an impressive young goalkeeper in no mood to be beaten. Papy Djilobodji’s late red card for a second caution took some of the gloss off for Sunderland.

Rejected Yaya Toure’s brace gives City away victory

Yaya Toure scores his first goal Yaya Toure marked his shock return to the Manchester City team with two goals as his side grabbed a dramatic late win at Crystal Palace. Toure, making his first Premier League appearance of the season, combined with Nolito before firing City ahead. Palace’s pressure paid off when Wilfried Zaha set up substitute Connor Wickham to smash home a second-half equaliser. But Toure, who has not figured at all for City for almost three months, had the final word when he turned home Kevin de Bruyne’s corner from close range. The win moves City second in the table, level on points with leaders Liverpool and with an identical goal difference. Palace, who suffered their fifth straight league defeat, remain one point above the relegation zone.

Giroud’s late goal earns Arsenal draw at Old Trafford

Olivier Giroud’s 89th-minute equaliser earned Arsenal a point and denied Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United a victory they deserved at Old Trafford. Juan Mata looked to have put United on course for three points with a sweeping left-foot finish from Ander Herrera’s cut-back after 68 minutes. Arsenal had not had an effort on goal but secured the draw that leaves them six points ahead of United when substitute Giroud rose at the far post to head home Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross. Advertisement United had controlled a game that was ordinary for long periods, with Arsenal keeper Petr Cech making important interventions and Mourinho left furious that they were denied a first-half penalty by referee Andre Marriner when Nacho Monreal hauled down Antonio Valencia. Mourinho cut a dejected figure at the final whistle as this result means he has now faced Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in the league this season and not recorded a win. This is the latest chapter in what is

Recession: Journalists worst hit by hard times – NUJ

A cross-section of journalists at an election collation centre The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has decried the current hardship faced by most journalists due to the prevailing and ongoing economic recession in the country. Mr Rex Arum, Chairman of NUJ, Enugu State Council, who spoke in an interview in Enugu on Saturday, attributed it to weak financial standing of most journalists. Arum noted that journalists in the country were the worst hit in the prevailing and ongoing hardship due to “their weak financial earnings and standing. “This hard time is easily seen and felt among our members all over the country. “Some, such as freelancers and stringers are not paid; while the commission that is due to them if at all, is not even coming any longer. “Most of our members on paid employment are owed several months of salaries. “While media establishments and organisations pay journalists a paltry wage as salary to go home with, after months of waiting for the same salary. “It

It’s time to outlaw ‘Jungle Justice’ in Nigeria

Alleged-7-year-old-boy-burnt for stealing garri For as long as one can remember there has always been ‘jungle justice’ in Nigeria. All it takes is for somebody to shout ‘ole’ (thief) and anybody seen running away – the suspect or not – is apprehended, subject to a kangaroo court before being beaten mercilessly to a pulp – or even killed in the most gruesome fashion imaginable. It is wrong. Yes, the suspect might have committed a serious crime – murder, kidnapping etc – but it’s not up to the members of the public to take justice into their own hands. The police and courts, however inept they are, are there to deal with these kinds of things. In the eyes of the law everybody is innocent until proven guilty. A man about to be lynched will not have a fair trial at the hands of a baying mob. And most important of all tragic mistakes can be made. How many times have some unfortunate ones happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time? Take the case of the ALUU 4; four Uniport stud

Artisans lament decline in enrolment for apprenticeship

A Vulcaniser Artisans in Umuahia have expressed concern with the drop in the population of youths eager to undergo apprenticeship in different skills in the area. They disclosed in Umuahia in separate interviews that many young people, who could not go to school, preferred to drive commercial tricycle, popularly called Keke, rather than learn a trade. They said that the craze for the tricycle was killing entrepreneurial skills among the youth of the area. The artisans blamed the trend on the quest for quick money, saying that many people lacked the patience to learn a skill and earn a living from it. A metal fabricator, Mr Emenike Nwankume, said that the trend had made many young boys to abandon their God-given talents. “The trend has derailed many young men. Keke is not a profession and cannot compare with handiwork. “It is better to develop one’s talent through practical training,” Nwankume said, adding that the training will make one self-employed and an employer of labour.
