Flash floods kill 26 in Egypt

Flash floods in Egypt Twenty-six people have been killed in accidents related to flash floods in parts of Egypt this week, state television reported on its website Saturday. The deaths occurred in the provinces of southern Sinai, the Red Sea and Sohag, areas hardest hit by torrential rains that started on Thursday, the report said, citing the Health Ministry. On Saturday, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail visited the Red Sea town of Ras Gharib and inspected the damaged caused by flooding there, Egyptian television said. Dozens of Ras Gharib residents, angered by the government’s response to the floods, blocked a main road in the town and prevented Ismail from completing his tour, independent newspaper al-Masry al-Youm reported. The protesters chanted slogans against the prime minister, the report said. Online pictures purportedly from Ras Gharib showed cars trapped in flooded streets. Last year, the governor of Alexandria, Egypt’s second-biggest city, resigned after residents accuse

Ronaldo scores hat-trick in Madrid’s win

Ronaldo Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick and missed a penalty as Real Madrid beat Alaves and increased their lead at the top of La Liga. Deyverson gave Alaves an early lead but then gave a penalty away which was converted by the Portugal forward. Ronaldo added a second before the break with a deflected shot but had a second spot-kick saved by Alaves goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco 10 minutes from time. Alvaro Morata scored Real’s third before Ronaldo completed his treble. Zinedine Zidane’s side are three points clear of Sevilla, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Sporting Gijon earlier in the day. Alaves were unbeaten at home in La Liga before this match, but once again Ronaldo’s impact on the game was decisive. The 31-year-old confidently sent Pacheco the wrong away from the penalty spot to equalise after Brazilian forward Deyverson was deemed to have handled, then his long-range effort sailed into the top corner. Pacheco guessed correctly to save Ronaldo’s second penalty, but Re

Liverpool win 4-2 at Palace

Philippe Coutinho is man of the match Liverpool moved level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City courtesy of a thrilling victory at Crystal Palace. Goals from Emre Can, Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino secured the Reds’ fifth win in six league games and only goal difference now separates City, second-placed Arsenal and Liverpool in third. Despite their brilliance in attack, Liverpool’s defence remains a weakness, with Lovren twice allowing James McArthur to level before the break. It was a wonderfully entertaining match, with the opening 45 minutes particularly pleasing on the eye as defensive mishaps and attacking verve resulted in five goals – the most in a first half in the Premier League this season. Indeed, the first three goals in a breathless encounter came within a hectic spell of five minutes and 45 seconds. Liverpool were mesmerising going forward with Philippe Coutinho pulling the strings once again with his wonderful passing. The Brazili

City return to top with emphatic 4-0 win over West Brom

Aguero Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League in emphatic style as victory at West Brom ended Pep Guardiola’s worst run in management. City and boss Guardiola were without a win in six matches in all competitions, but Sergio Aguero flashed in Ilkay Gundogan’s through ball to give them the lead. The Baggies were flat and Aguero struck again, punishing hesitant defending with a powerful, top-corner finish. West Brom improved hugely after the break but failed to take their chances before Gundogan twice slotted home – first from Aguero’s chip and then after being found by Kevin de Bruyne. The win means City leapfrog Arsenal, who won 4-1 at Sunderland earlier in the day, into first place in the table with 10 matches played. Tony Pulis’ side struck the post through Gareth McAuley late on and should have got one back at 2-0 through Salomon Rondon, but they slip to 15th and are now without a win in their past five games. Aguero’s last goals for City came in the 3-1 l

Arsenal beat Sunderland 4-1 to increase pressure on Moyes

Alexis Sanchez Arsenal increased the pressure on Sunderland manager David Moyes with a comfortable victory over a Black Cats side who remain bottom of the table and without a Premier League win this season. Alexis Sanchez put the Gunners ahead when he got in front of defender Lamine Kone to head in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross. The dominant visitors had a strong penalty appeal turned down after Sanchez looked to have been brought down before Jermain Defoe equalised from the spot after keeper Petr Cech had fouled Duncan Watmore. However, Arsenal reasserted their authority and lead with three goals in six minutes and 20 seconds. Olivier Giroud came off the bench to guide in a shot and then headed in a Mesut Ozil corner, while Sanchez’s close range effort was the signal for the home fans to start streaming out of the Stadium of Light.
