Cristiano Ronaldo Real Madrid and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has won the UEFA Best Player in Europe award for the second time. President Buhari to attend conference in Nairobi

NAN to set up video, photo portal – Onanuga

The Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday announced the Agency’s plan to set up a video portal, to enhance its multimedia services to clients. Onanuga, who disclosed this during a visit to the management of ThisDay Newspapers in Apapa, Lagos, said that the agency would also develop a photo portal. INEC to deploy 18,511 personnel for Edo governorship poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said it would deploy 18,511 personnel for the conduct of Sept. 10 governorship election in Edo. This is contained in the commission’s daily bulletin issued on Thursday in Abuja. The number, according to the commission, will comprise one Returning Officer, 18 Local Government Area Collation Officers, 192 Registration Area Collation Officers and 263 Supervisory Presiding Officers. Others are 2,627 Presiding Officers, 12,036 Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs) I, II and III; 2,530 Assistant Presiding Officers and 728 Reserve APOs. Also on the deployment list were 19 LGA Supervisors, with one “Headquarters Reserve’’ and 97 Registration Area Cluster Supervisors as well one headquarters reserve. Edo, with 18 local government areas, has a total of 1,925,105 registered voters, 192 Registration Areas, 2, 627 Polling Units and 4, 011 Voting Points.

Security guard arraigned for stealing employer’s car

The gavel of justice A 23-year-old security guard, Francis John, who allegedly stole a Nissan saloon car valued at N3 million, has appeared before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. John, who is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, has pleaded not guilty. But the prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko insisted that he committed the offences on Aug. 18 at No. 31, Adelabu St., Surulere, at about 5.30 p.m. According to Okoliko, the car was stolen at the residence of the complainant, Mr Oladapo Olugbenga. “When he came back from work at about 5.30 p.m., he discovered that his car had been stolen. “He asked the security guard about the car but he denied any knowledge about the movement of the car. “The complainant made some inquiries on the street and was reliably informed that his former driver drove the car out of the compound, ’’Okoliko told the court. The protesting Internally Displaced Persons in Maiduguri today Hundreds of Internally Displaced Persons have left their camps and taken to the streets to protest against hunger and thirst in their respective camps. Mostly women and children, the visibly angry IDPs barricaded the city’s main entry point, causing a gridlock along the Kano Maiduguri highway, Premium Times reports. Security operatives seemed helpless as the IDPs refused to leave the highway. “We are not fighting but fighting for our survival. The foods are not being supplied, there is no water. FCT CP restates commitment to apprehend Eunice Olawale’s killers

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose Four World Bank officials had reportedly drowned at Egbe Dam in Egbe Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State. Archbishop Desmond Tutu Archbishop Desmond Tutu admitted himself to a Cape Town hospital on Wednesday “for treatment to a recurring infection,” according to a statement from his family. Three men on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly injuring a policeman with a broken bottle as they tried to evade the law. The accused, Chiadikaobi Jonah, 28, Monday Chukwu, 35 and Chigbo Victor, 33, of unknown addresses, are facing a four-count charge bordering on assault. According to the prosecutor, Insp. Eruada Victor, the accused persons, on Aug. 22, at Ladipo Road, Mushin, Lagos, unlawfully assaulted Sgt. Lawrence Audu with a broken bottle. “The accused, who were trying to evade the law, hit the sergeant on the head with a bottle, inflicting injuries on his head while in the course of carrying out his duty,” he said. Nigerians operating in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry say it is now impacting the lives of youths by engaging them gainful employment and keeping away from vices. 15-year-old docked for stealing cable wires

The gavel of justice A 15-year-old boy, Ayo Oladele, was on Thursday brought before an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court in Osun over the alleged theft of cable wires valued at about N300,000. The Prosecutor, Insp. Fagboyinbo Abiodun told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 21 at about midnight at the Halleluyah Estate, Osogbo. Abiodun said the accused person conspired together with others now at large to steal the cable wires valued at about N300,000 and kept it in an uncompleted building owned by one Oladele Samuel. He said it took the intervention of the residents of the neighborhood to apprehend the accused, before the arrival of the Nigerian Police. Drones to deliver pizzas in New Zealand

Domino’s Pizza on Thursday said it would begin trial use of drones to deliver pizzas in New Zealand in what it said was the world’s first. The company posted pictures of the delivery-drone on Facebook and said it aimed to begin aerial pizza deliveries to its New Zealand customers later this year. The carbon-fibre drone has been developed in partnership with U.S. delivery-drone company Flirtey, and is designed to lower its cheesy cargo to pizza lovers via a tether. Domino’s said the drones, which use military grade autopilot technology and encrypted communications, would zoom along at 30 kilometers per hour, flying at an altitude of approximately 60 meters. The drones will initially only be used in calm weather, with the company opting to revert to traditional delivery methods during periods of high wind and rain. An IDP camp in Borno The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Borno on Thursday said that it had arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly raping an Internally Displaced Person (IDP). Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, NSCDC Commandant in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri that the 13-year-old victim from Chibok was staying with her aunt at the Colori Camp. Ibrahim said that the suspect was arrested in Dala area of the state capital. He said that the suspect lured the victim with some money and took her to a house in Colori ward behind the NNPC quarters, where he raped her. “The suspect held the victim hostage for two days in his house. After an intensive search by the command, the girl was later found with the culprit,” Ibrahim said. Secondary school boys rape girl, video it in Lagos  A video has gone viral at the Awodi-Ora Estate area of Ajegunle, Lagos State. It is the video of two known teenage boys raping a girl also known in the area. Residents of Awodi-Ora Estate and its environs woke up to the mysterious circulation of the porn like film, showing the sexual escapade of the boys in the area with the teenage girl. The film is the rape of 15-year-old Hannah. The boys, whose names are yet unknown, are also said to be secondary school boys. Hannah until the incident, resides at Dada Onijoma Street and also attended Rebecca Secondary School in Ajegunle, a suburb of Lagos State. Hannah was raped by the two boys after she was lured into a hotel by one of them. It was gathered that as each took turn at her, the other used his camera phone to video tape the action. Archbishop Desmond Tutu Archbishop Desmond Tutu admitted himself to a Cape Town hospital on Wednesday “for treatment to a recurring infection,” according to a statement from his family. The 84-year-old archbishop will remain in the hospital for one or two weeks, according to his family’s statement. They noted that Tutu went through a similar treatment last year. He also underwent hospital tests for a persistent infection in 2013. A year later, he canceled travel plans because of a long-running battle with prostate cancer. Tutu, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his efforts to end apartheid in his native South Africa, has remained active with the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation and other organizations. He played a key role in that nation’s transition from the apartheid era, including serving as chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission at the direction of then-President Nelson Mandela.
