Filmmaker tells Nollywood to refresh film production

A Nigerian filmmaker, Efe Mike, on Wednesday, urged filmmakers and marketers in the country to revitalise film production by adopting new techniques. Mike in Lagos said that African countries, including Nollywood, should learn from other countries, which had made their marks in filmmaking. “It has become a thing of the past that local filmmakers or marketers in any particular African film industry including Nollywood, could make it on their own. “Those in the diaspora are as relevant to those in the local African countries just as the local countries are to those in the diaspora. “The market is now global and would take all the output. There is no need for infighting or division borne out of the fear that one group would stifle the other. “There is the need to work together and grow or face the danger of dwindling fortunes or the consequences of isolated irrelevancy,’’ he said. Mike, who is aspiring to redefine filmmaking, also said that Nollywood needed to improve on its film co

Izilein warns against appointing foreign coach for Eagles

A former coach of the Super Falcons, Godwin Izilein, on Wednesday in Benin warned against appointing a foreign coach for the Super Eagles now. Izilein said that the senior national male football team may not qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia as a result of this. “This is because the foreign handler will not have quality time to know the players and their mentality,” he said. Izilein, also a former coach of the Golden Eaglets, said appointing a foreign coach was equally an unnecessary waste of fund and shows a lack of respect for Nigerian coaches. “I don’t know what this rush for a foreign coach is all about when we do not have time on our hands for the qualification games for Russia 2018. “The national football authorities must understand that a coach who knows his onions needs not less than a year to know the players and their mentality. “He will then need also another year to put a good team in place. “And, again, I consider the amount that will be wasted on hiring a fo

Brexit vote is irreversible – Merkel

Britain’s decision to leave the EU is irreversible, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says following summit talks in Brussels with British Prime Minister David Cameron and the bloc’s other leaders. “I see no way to reverse that,” Merkel says of the referendum outcome, while adding that the issue was not discussed with Cameron. “This is not the hour for wishful thinking the referendum stands as a reality, she said. “The atmosphere was serious, amicable and borne by the awareness that this is more of a sad event, but that it is a reality,” Merkel said of the leaders’ talks, noting that consequences now need to be drawn.

Abortion requests rise amid Zika fears

The mysterious Zika virus has been detected in 61 countries, the majority in Latin America and more pregnant women are considering abortions out of fear of birth defects in their babies. The Zika virus may be driving a surge in interest in abortions in Latin America, according to a new study published by the New England Journal of Medicine. According to the study, requests for abortion services in the region through one non-profit provider have jumped more than a third, with increases of close to double in hard-hit Brazil and Venezuela. Abortion is illegal or severely restricted in most of Latin America, and so there are no official data on abortion rates. Researchers instead examined data from the organisation Women on Web, which offers access to pharmaceutical abortions for women in countries where abortion is not available. A comparison of abortion service requests through Women on Web before and after the first public warnings about Zika six months ago showed increases of at l

Global best solutions to Nigeria’s power problem

3D Electric powerlines over sunrise A power utility expert, Seyi Fabode, has recommended international best solutions to the power problem confronting Nigeria. In other words, he argued that if we agree with the premise that all consumers, regardless of class, deserve to have stable, affordable and secure electricity, then it’s time to embrace the change currently going on in the electricity industry globally. In his words: “There is a chance to start afresh in Nigeria, as the way electricity is generated, produced, stored and marketed is changing. There is a wider array of choices for generation (solar, geothermal, wind etc), there are storage options which serve the needs of average Nigerian homes at less cost than the current diesel alternatives, and smaller companies can get into the business of producing electricity for different segments of the market. “The change we have to embrace in Nigeria, with an opportunity to even leapfrog countries like the USA in adoption, is inevit

Arsene Wenger is number one target for England job

Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager The English FA will launch a global search for the next England manager – but Arsene Wenger is already at the top of their list. Gareth Southgate will be placed in caretaker charge and is expected to lead the Three Lions into the World Cup qualifying campaign, which starts on September 4 against Slovakia. But FA bosses admit the next appointment is massive and that they want someone with vast experience at the highest level to replace Roy Hodgson. He quit in the wake of Monday night’s shambolic defeat to Iceland in Nice that saw England exit Euro 2016. A three man panel of FA chief executive Martin Glenn, technical director Dan Ashworth and vice chairman David Gill will make the final decision on who the new boss is. But Glenn admits there will be no rush and that the FA are prepared to wait as long as it takes – up to a year if necessary – to get the right man. Starsport understands Arsenal boss Wenger, who has one more season to run on his Arse

AC Milan appoints Vincenzo Montella as new coach

Vicenzo Montella AC Milan have named former Sampdoria boss Vincenzo Montella as their new head coach on a two-year contract. The 42-year-old will take over from Cristian Brocchi, who was acting as caretaker boss following Sinisa Mihajlovic’s sacking in April. Milan finished seventh in Serie A last season and lost to Juventus in the Italian Cup final. The San Siro club said it was looking forward to “the brilliant system of play of the new Rossoneri coach”. Former Italy striker Montella has also managed Catania and Fiorentina, following a playing career spent mainly with Roma and Sampdoria. Montella also has a stint at English club, Fulham. He joined on a six-month loan on 4 January 2007 and was given the number 11 shirt. He scored twice against Leicester City on his home debut in the FA Cup. He scored again on 27 January in the same competition against Stoke City. On 13 January 2007, he made his Premier League debut against West Ham United. Against Tottenham at Craven Cottage

Fayose And Nigeria’s Immunity Scandal by Okey Ndibe

By Okey Ndibe Professor Okey Ndibe Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has a solid claim to the title of politician par excellence of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. In many ways, the man symbolizes the idiosyncrasies, texture and other pathological characteristics of the high-priced, frustrating experiment that goes by the name of democracy in Nigeria. His storied political career has involved a controversy over his academic credentials. It is ironic that questions were—perhaps are—raised about the educational training of a man who presides over Ekiti State—a state with one of the highest PhD degrees per capita in Nigeria. During his short-lived first stint as governor—from 2003 to 2006—Mr. Fayose was accused of several crimes, including massive theft of public resources and ordering a murder. He left office in disgrace, impeached by a state legislature that was under pressure from then President Olusegun Obasanjo. The US government once had cause to revoke visas issued to hi

Suicide bombers kill 28, wound dozens at Istanbul airport

Paramedics help injured outside Turkey’s largest airport, Istanbul Ataturk, Turkey, following a blast June 28, 2016. Three suicide bombers opened fire before blowing themselves up at the entrance to the main international airport in Istanbul on Tuesday, killing 28 people and wounding dozens more, the provincial governor said. Police fired shots to try to stop two of the attackers just before they reached a security checkpoint at the arrivals hall at Ataturk airport, Europe’s third-busiest, but they blew themselves up, a second Turkish official said. Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin told reporters that 28 people had been killed and around 60 wounded. Several witnesses reported two explosions but Sahin said authorities believed there may have been three suicide bombers. “There was a huge explosion, extremely loud. The roof came down. Inside the airport it is terrible, you can’t recognize it, the damage is big,” said Ali Tekin, who was at the arrivals hall waiting for a guest when the a
