Trending: Fashola under fire over 3rd Mainland Bridge repair

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN Motorists plying the 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos have been attacking the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola over the ongoing repair works on the bridge. Many of them have taken to the social media to vent their anger at Fashola over the long hours they spent on the bridge before getting to their destinations. Some of them accused the minister of insensitivity by not informing them earlier of government’s intention to commence repair works on the bridge. Following the ongoing repair works on the bridge, a twitter user, @Miz hazy complained that she spent nine hours on the bridge on Friday. Another twitted: ”Na wao, this Fashola man no send us o. which kind suffering be dis.” Majority of them called on the minister and his team to complete the repairs quickly so that they could carry on their activities without delay.

Students cry out over high price of garri

Garri Some students in Ilorin have decried the sudden increase in price of garri, commonly referred to as “students’ food’’. Some of the students expressed their concerns in separate interviews on Saturday in Ilorin. The students said it had become almost impossible to have a day’s meal with the increase in the staple food. A student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Dayo Abiodun, said that it was difficult to feed with the sudden increase in the price of Garri. He said a bowl of garri which was sold at N150, now sold for N240 in the market, while a cup now sells at N30. “In the past, you see your room mates sharing garri among themselves freely but since the end of last year, no student can afford to willingly give out a cup of the commodity. “Garri is the most friendly and easily accessible food for us as students but now it has become scarce commodity in the hostel,’’ he said. Domestic Violence Pauline Mugure, a Kenyan lady has been rendered unattractive by her husband who reportedly attacked her and set her on fire in a violent domestic abuse attack. In a social media picture that has now gone viral, she is seen next to a makeshift house, struggling to speak while revealing the burns on her neck, back and face . Association decries increase in price of cassava

cassava The Cassava Traders’ Association (CTA) in Niger has decried the continuous increase in price of cassava in Minna. The association’s Secretary, Mr Emeka Animekwe, said in Minna that a pickup load had increased from N100,000 in October 2016 to N130,000 in January 2017. “In the past, a pickup load was shared into 19 heaps for N 6,000 each, but now a pickup load is ‎N130,000 and is shared into 25 places for N6,000 a heap. “Garri was sold for N250 a measure before Christmas, but it is now N500 a measure now. Similarly, cassava floor is now N300 a measure.‎ “This situation is unbearable, we are suffering. DELSU The 6,045 students offered admission by the Delta State University Abraka (DELSU), into the regular degree programmes of the institution for the 2016/2017 academic session, on Saturday took the matriculation oath. Drug Dealer The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has intercepted a textile merchant with 4.4kgs of methamphetamine worth $1.4million at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on his way to Cambodia. It is the first seizure of the year at the airport and the first consignment going to Cambodia. The 40 parcels of drugs, concealed inside foodstuff, were detected during the outward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight. The 47 years old suspect, Ifeka Charles Obi, from Oba Idemili South LGA of Anambra State, said he had been promised N1m payment by his “sponsors”. Gombe State University admits 3,242 students

Gombe State University Gombe State University (GSU), has admitted 3,242 students for its 2016/2017 academic season. Speaking at the matriculation ceremony in Gombe on Saturday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ibrahim Umar said 9,000 applied for admission, but only 3,242 were admitted. “I want you to know very well that you are in GSU, you must study hard to have a good class of degree. “We don’t tolerate indiscipline in GSU, avoid drug abuse because it will not be allowed in our environment. ” We want to produce responsible leaders of tomorrow, not mediocre,” he said. Shell relocates gas pipeline across Kolo Creek

Shell logo The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has relocated its Kolo Creek-Soku gas pipeline across Kolo River in Bayelsa from the river surface to the river bed. A correspondent who visited the Kolo Creek oilfield operated by SPDC on Friday reports that the gas pipeline was no longer located on the water surface across the creek. Oil workers were seen refilling dug out sand from the creek. SPDC had in October 2016 passed the gas pipeline above the surface of the Kolo River, hampering navigation by fishing canoes, transport boats amongst others. The development triggered adverse reactions from environmentalists and residents affected by the blockade.
