Ngige warns governors not to cut salaries, work hours

Senator Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has warned state governors against reduction in remunerations and hours of work of workers. In a statement issued by Mr Samuel Olowokere, Deputy Director Press in the ministry, Ngige said the warning was necessary to restore industrial harmony and forestall breakdown of law and order. He said the warning followed protracted industrial crisis involving the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nasarawa State Government. The minister said the step was pursuant to the powers invested on him by section 5(1) and (2) of the Trade Dispute Act, Laws of Nigeria, 2004. He said this was also predicated on a letter to the him by Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State for labour conciliation by the ministry. Lawmaker kidnapped in Kaduna

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State The Police in Kaduna on Tuesday confirmed the abduction of Ibrahim Ismail, a member of Kaduna State House of Assembly. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Aliyu Usman, made the confirmation in an interview. Ismail was abducted early on Tuesday at his residence in Abapka area in Kaduna metropolis. The lawmaker represents Tudun Wada constituency in the House of Assembly . Usman said the command had deployed its officers to rescue the lawmaker. He said the rescue effort was being conducted in conjunction with the intelligence unit of the Force Headquarters.

241 Nigerians repatriated from Libya

Deported Nigerians Kazeem Ugbodaga At least, 241 Nigerians have been repatriated from Libya, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has disclosed. NEMA’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Farinloye said the 241 Nigerians were repatriated on Tuesday from Libya and landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 3:41pm. “The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) facilitated the repatriation of the 241 returnees from Libya today. The breakdown indicates that 67 female and 174 male were repatriated,” he said. 128,149 pass Placement test into JSS in Lagos

Dr Oluranti Adebule, Lagos State deputy governor A total of 128,149 pupils passed the recently conducted 2016 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and Placement Test into the State Junior Secondary, JSS, in Lagos public schools. The result released by the Lagos State Examination Board revealed that 128,149, representing 88.14% candidates, who sat for the examination, passed. The Director, Lagos State Examination Board, Mr. Olufemi Hassan, who gave a breakdown of the population of students who participated in the examination, noted that out of the 145,393 candidates who enrolled for the test, 77,982 representing 53.64 % candidates were from public schools while 67,411 representing 46.36% candidates were from private schools. He explained that candidates who failed in English, Mathematics or both were to re-sit the failed subjects in line with the BECE policy, adding that the re-sit would take place on 29 September, 2016 at designated centres to be announced later. Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso Armed policemen on Tuesday sealed the residence of former Governor of Kano State, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, located on Lugard Road in Kano metropolis. Driver arraigned over reckless driving, manslaughter

The gavel of justice A 39-year-old driver, Edwin Onoja, who allegedly drove in a dangerous manner and caused the death of a pedestrian, was on Tuesday arraigned in Lagos. The accused, who lives at Ikota Estate, Ajah-Lekki, a suburb of Lagos, is facing charges bordering on reckless driving and manslaughter at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. The prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi told the court that the offences were committed on Aug. 11 along Ikeja Military Cantonment, Lagos. Perezi said that the accused drove in a reckless manner and in the process knock down a pedestrian, one Seyi Sunday. “The victim lost a lot of blood and eventually died in the hospital,” he said. The offences contravened Sections 19(1) and 21 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty. The Magistrate, Mrs O. Olanipekun, granted the accused to a bail of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum. The magistrate adjourned the case to Nov. 17 for mention.

A 23-year-old man, Chukwu Dalington, who allegedly stole two live turkeys in Lagos with others still at large and ate them, has been released on bail in the sum of N50, 000. A Surulere Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, also granted the accused one surety. The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing. Shekau wounded in air raid- Army

Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram leader The Nigerian army says Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau has been seriously wounded on his shoulder in an air bombardment by the Nigerian Air Force. The air strike was carried out on 19 August. Col. Sani Usman, acting Director, Army Public Relations said today that three other Boko Haram terrorists were confirmed dead in the attack. They were identified as Abubakar Mubi, Malam Nuhu and Malam Hamman. Colonel Usman in a text message to NAN clarified that Shekau was not among the dead, which implies that ‘fatally wounded’, contained in his earlier statement meant to convey ‘seriously wounded’. He said the raid took place while the terrorists were performing Friday rituals at Taye village, Gombale general area within Sambisa Forest. NDLEA staff drown in river chasing drug baron

NDLEA operatives The Borno Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed the death of one its staff who got drowned in a river while chasing a notorious drug baron. Ona Ogilegwu, NDLEA Commandant in Borno, disclosed on Monday that the incident occurred during an operation in Gwange area of Maiduguri. “In an effort to arrest a notorious baron, four men of the command were involved in a water mishap after diving into the Gwange River in pursuit of the suspect. The narcotic boss said that the NDLEA officials were involved in the mishap because they could not swim. “The sad incident led to the death of one of our officers in the hospital after a failed attempt to revive him. “The survivors were discharged from hospital today,’’ Ogilegwu. 5 injured in Kano varsity building collapse

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje Five persons on Monday sustained injuries following the collapse of part of the Department of Architecture building under construction at the Kano State University of Science and Technology (KSUT), Wudil. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Shehu Musa disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Kano. According to him, two of the injured persons who have been receiving treatment at a hospital have been discharged.
