Naira stable against dollar as CBN meets over economy

Nigeria’s currency, the naira The Naira on Monday remained stable at the parallel market. The Nigerian currency maintained N378 to the dollar at the close of trading on Monday afternoon, keeping same value as at Friday. Also, the naira maintained N495 to the Pound Sterling, but weakened further against the Euro, exchanging for N415, from N407 posted on Friday at the Bureau de Change (BDC) Segment of the market. The naira continued a downward slope at the interbank segment of the market, hitting a spot rate of N309.84 to the dollar from about N300 posted on Friday. Currency traders continued to rain counter accusations against dollar scarcity as explanation for the week performance of the Nigerian currency. They said that activities at the market was slow as industry players watched keenly in anticipation of the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the CBN that was underway in Abuja. Yakubu Dogara, Speaker House of Representatives The former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmimin Jibrin, Monday continued his series of revelations on the fraud and corruption perpetuated by Yakubu Dogara. In a statement made available to journalists, the lawmaker alleged that Dogara frequently solicits for inappropriate favours from agencies and multinational companies. 2 die as tanker explosion rocks Apapa-Oshodi expressway

Thick smoke and fire from the explosion Two people have been confirmed dead as a tanker conveying petroleum product exploded on Monday at Cele area on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria. The fuel tanker had run into a stationary truck which led to the explosion around 5:00pm. A loud explosion was heard in the area as balls of fire envelop the atmosphere. The driver of the truck and a boy were said to have been consumed by the resultant inferno. There was pandemonium at Cele area as people ran in different direction to avert death. Traffic gridlock has built on both sides of the expressway. Polio: Jigawa to immunise 1.7m children

The Jigawa Government on Monday said it targeted to immunise 1.7 million children in ongoing Outbreak Response Vaccination (ORV) against Polio in the state. The State Immunisation Officer, Alhaji Hassan Kwalam, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview in Dutse. Kwalam said that the state had recruited no fewer than 10,000 personnel to administer the vaccines on children below the age of five. He said that 2,868 teams comprised of three persons each had been mobilised to carry out the vaccination across the state. According to him, the exercise will be conducted simultaneously across the 27 local government areas of the state. Kwalam stated that traditional rulers and religious leaders in the state had also been mobilised to ensure strict compliance with the rules and cooperation of parents and guardians. He expressed happiness on the level of compliance so far in the ongoing, saying that the target would be attained.

The gavel of justice Jethro Ibileke/Benin‎ A 28-year old housewife, Mrs. Mary Attah, has been sentenced to death by hanging by a Delta State High Court, sitting in Effurun, for stabbing her husband, Pastor Darlington Attah, with a kitchen knife and setting him ablaze. She was pronounced guilty on the one-count charge preffered against her by Justice E.I. Oritsejafor. The prosecution counsel, Patrick Mekako Esq, told the court that the accused who was married to the deceased, with four children, had on or about 6 July, 2012 at Effurun, within the Effurun Judicial Division, attacked her husband with a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the neck as a result of an alleged phone call from the husband’s lover. He further told the Court that the accused was infuriated by the telephone call at a time they were having a ‘nice time’ which prompted her to rush to the kitchen, took a knife and pepper which she rubbed on her husband’s face to demobilize him before stabbing him in the neck. Banker docked over alleged N4.1m fraud

A former employee of FirstBank of Nigeria, Timothy Adewale, who allegedly defrauded the bank to the tune of N4.1 million was on Monday docked at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. Adewale, 32, a former cash processor with the bank,and a resident of No.10, Ejalonibu St., Oko-Oba in Agege area of Lagos State, is standing trial on a charge of stealing. The prosecutor, Sgt. Nicholas Akpene, said that the accused committed the ‎offence between April 18 and 26, during working hours at FirstBank Plc, Ikeja Industrial Estate branch. Akpene said the accused stole the sum of N1.4 million belonging to the bank. According to him, the offence contravenes Section 285 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused pleaded not guilty. The magistrate, Mrs A. T. Omoyele, granted the accused N1million-bail with two sureties in like sum. NAFDAC seizes unwholesome, unregistered drugs in Enugu

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Enugu says it has confiscated unwholesome and unregistered sedative drugs worth more than N25 million. Two bank officials, Tiaminu Lukeman ,48, and Shogaolu Sherif,30, who allegedly stole N30 million from their employer, were on Monday in Lagos, granted N5million bail each. An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused persons two sureties each in like sum as part of the bail conditions. The magistrate, Mrs. A. O. Sholadoye said that one of the sureties must be a level-16 civil servant and both sureties must show evidence of tax payment. The accused persons are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, forgery, fraud and stealing. Lukeman resides in Block 8, Flat 1, LSDPC Estate, Ikotun, while Sherif lives in Block D, Flat 11, Alhaji Masha along Kilo Road, Surulere, both in Lagos State. Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. The new Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly Dr Justin Okonoboh The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie, has stepped down. She was replaced by the Deputy Speaker, Dr. Justin Okonoboh on Monday by 18 out of the 24 members of the House and sworn in at about 11am. Ativie was sworn in on May ‎3 when her predecessor, Victor Edoror, was impeached. Hundreds of pensioners on Monday defied the heavy rain and took to the streets of Benin, the Edo capital, to protest non-payment of arrears of pension ranging from 10 to 42 months. The pensioners, armed with placards of various inscriptions, took their protests to the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin. A Spokesman of the pensioners, Mr Gabriel Osemwenkhai, told newsmen that the pensioners in the state had been experiencing hard times over the non-payment of their pension and gratuity by the government. He said that some pensioners had died as a result of hardship. Osemwenkhai said pensioners involved comprised public servants, who retired in 2011 and owed by the state government. Man docked for breaking into pastor’s apartment

A 25-year-old man, Ofuajo Eseogbene, was on Monday brought before an Ota Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ogun over alleged burglary. The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and burglary. The Prosecutor, Cpl. Abdul Kareem Mustapha, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 26 at about 2.00 a.m. at No. 2 Ireakari St., Itele, Ota. Mustapha alleged that the accused unlawfully broke into the house of the complainant, Pastor Adegbenle Taiwo and stole valuable items. The Akwa Ibom Police Command on Monday confirmed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Gas pipeline explosion in Obotim Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom. The State Commissioner of Police, Murtala Mani, who confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Uyo, attributed the explosion to a technical fault. A Nigerian national, Uzoma Eleazar, has been arrested for attempting to sell seeds for the cure of AIDS in an online scam by the Local Crime Branch, LCB, Thane Rural in India. FRSC creates data bank for road traffic accident

Federal Road Safety Corps The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says the need to have a unified road accident data in the country informed the creation of the “National Crash Report Information System (NACRIS)”. According to the corps 2015 annual report, the NACRIS is a committee responsible for the collation and harmonization of road traffic accident data from all agencies generating data on accident. The report said the FRSC and Ministry of Health serve as Secretariat of the NACRIS due to the fact that accident “is a health burden”. It said other members of the committee are: Police, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), WHO, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Also in the committee are Federal Fire Service (FFS), Military, Directorate of Road Traffic Service (DRTS) and the National Insurance Commission. A fire outbreak on Sunday night destroyed goods and properties worth millions of naira at the old market in Sokoto. The fire, which started around 10.00pm lasted for about three hours before it was put off by firemen, traders and Good Samaritans, including Gov. Aminu Tambuwal.
