Herdsmen kill 2 in Kaduna

The alleged Boko Haram herdsmen, with their arms No fewer than two persons have been killed in an attack by suspected herdsmen in the early hours of Tuesday at Ninte village in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The Chairman, Interim Management Committee of the council, Mr Bege Katukah, told newsmen that two persons lost their lives while properties, including houses were burnt during the attack. Katukah said although most of the villagers had deserted the village to neighbouring Zankan village for safety, security personnel had been deployed and the affected area combed. President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday met separately with some South East chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and six states’ governors in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The two meetings were held behind closed doors. The president first met with the governors of Zamfara, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Katsina, Ondo and Imo before meeting with the South East politicians led by former Senate President, Ken Nnamani. ‎The 18-member delegation, under the aegis of South East Group for Change, comprised mainly members of the ruling APC. The delegation included the National Auditor of APC, George Moghalu; former Senators ‎Ifeanyi Ararume and Osita Izunaso. Others were the former House of Representatives’ member, Sharon Ikeazor and the former Executive Vice-Charman of Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Ernest Ndukwe. FRSC raises alarm as 79 die on Okene-Lokoja road

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday raised an alarm over the high accident rate on the Okene-Lokoja-Koton Karfe-Gegu road corridor which claimed 79 lives in the past five months. Mr John Meheux, the FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer, who raised the alarm at the launching of a special intervention patrol along the corridor, said that 95 accidents were recorded along the corridor within the same period. He said that 789 persons were involved in the accidents, out of which 399 sustained varying degrees of injury. Meheux, who is in charge of Ekiti, Kwara and Kogi states, stressed the need to check the trend. He explained that the decision to introduce a special intervention patrol was to reduce the carnage, saying that the road was the second in the country to be accorded such attention. According to him, the intervention will help to reverse the trend and bring sanity to that corridor which serves as gateway to 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory. He also said that t

NDLEA nabs 162 suspected drug traffickers

NDLEA operatives Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, the Head, Public Affairs, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), says no fewer than 162 suspected drug traffickers have been apprehended in the last eight years. Ofoyeju made this known on Tuesday in Abuja. According to him, official figures of the NDLEA showed that about 162 suspected drug traffickers were apprehended at the nation’s airports with 982.42kgs, almost a ton of methamphetamine between 2009 and March 2016. 600 policemen for Nasarawa re-run election

Governor Tanko-Al-Makura of Nasarawa State The Police Command in Nasarawa state said it had deployed 600 personnel for the House of Representatives re-run election for Nasarawa/Toto Constituency on Wednesday. Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Lawal Shehu, disclosed this in Lafia on Tuesday. Shehu said that the election would hold in 51 polling units where results were cancelled in the first re-run held on Saturday. The result of the exercise in the constituency was cancelled following reported cases of over-balloting. “We are deploying so many policemen to prevent electoral violence and ensure smooth conduct of the polls,” he said. Shehu warned security personnel against accompanying politicians to polling units. He declared that the command would not hesitate to deal with any officer found at a polling unit, where he was not officially assigned to for election duty. Lagos residents now to buy water at kiosks

Babatunde Adejare, Commissioner for Environment The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Babatunde Adejare, on Tuesday said that the government would soon introduce Water Distribution Kiosk System, to optimise water supply in some parts of the state. A statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs and Research in the Ministry, Mr Tunde Awobiyi, in Lagos, said that the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) would supervise the kiosk system. “The government is appealing to the citizenry to bear with her, as they experience disruption of water supply in some parts of the state. “It is caused by shortage in supply of gas to the Akute Independent Power Plant (IPP). “The Water Distribution Kiosk will be a centralised water point to purchase potable water at a substantially cheaper rate, by the water vendors. “It is an innovation in Nigeria, and is meant to complement the five-kilometre reticulation and the existing network,” the statement said. 3 UN peacekeepers die in road accident

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Three Senegalese peacekeepers under the United Nations Operation in Cote d’Ivoire (ONUCI) died while on patrol after their vehicle overturned, a source from the UN mission said on Tuesday. The three peacekeepers were on a normal patrol when their vehicle overturned in unclear circumstances. Their death brought the total number of UN peacekeepers who have died in Cote d’Ivoire since their deployment in April 2004 to 104. A UN mission was deployed in Cote d’Ivore following a political crisis that broke out in 2002, dividing the country into two. Meanwhile, the South was then under the control of loyalist forces, while the North was under the control of armed rebels. Report says the mission is currently involved in the pacification of the country after the 2010 to 2011 post-election crisis. However, ONUCI has begun reducing the number of its officers in Cote d’Ivoire, with its mission expected to end in June 2017.

Enwerem said some MASSOB members were arrested for wrongful assembly and marching; causing public disorder, panic and disturbing the peace of the state. He said the group embarked on the march without any previous information or permit from the police and described their action as an embarrassment. The report showed that nearly 46 million people around the world are living as slaves, forced to work in factories, mines and farms, sold for sex, trapped in debt bondage or born into servitude. The survey by Walk Free Foundation, the Australia-based human rights group, increased the estimated number of people in modern slavery to 45.8 million from 35.8 million in 2014. Non Payment of Salary: Ondo workers begin indefinite strike

Gov. Olusegun Mimiko Civil Servants in Ondo State are to begin an indefinite strike action on Wednesday, June 1, to protest non payment of over five months salary. The strike notice is contained in a communiqué issued in Akure by the state Chairmen and Secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). It said that the decision followed an emergency meeting of the labour unions which reviewed the failure of the state government to pay the workers since January 2016. “It has become unbearable that workers have not received salaries for the past five months at a stretch. “That non-payment of salaries to workers have affected the wellbeing of workers/pensioners economically, socially, psychologically and health wise. “That workers of Ondo State can no longer bear this situation, in view of the untold hardship suffered by these workers,” it added. The outgoing Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State, Mr Joel Madaki, on Tuesday denied media reports that he promised to refund N5 million to the EFCC. Madaki’s name was among those listed to have received money from former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke for the 2015 Presidential Campaign. Madaki in a statement issued in Yola said he never made such promise to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “I never promised to return the N5 million. “What I said was that if it is proven beyond reasonable doubt that the N5 million is from the Presidential Campaign Fund and when it is discovered that it was not used for that purpose, then the Adamawa PDP Secretariat and myself shall arrange to refund.” Madaki acknowledged that he received N450 million as campaign fund for the state, but said that the money was delivered to a “Disbursement Committee” at the Government House, Yola.
