4 Suspected fraudsters arrested in Lagos

Two of the suspected fraudsters Kazeem Ugbodaga The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State police Command have arrested four suspects for allegedly swindling members of the public of various sums of money. The four suspects were picked up separately by the operatives in three incidents of fraud in Maryland, Ojodu Berger and Ajegunle between Tuesday and Thursday last week. The suspects, Kenneth Umukoro, 36; Uba Utokcha, 41; Joseph Onuoha, 40 and Ikechukwu Okeke, 25, individually confessed to RRS officers during interrogation. According to one of the victims, Ibeh Chiwenu, she was going to Ojodu Berger from Ojota when Kenneth Umukoro, driving a ash colour Toyota Camry 1997 model with the registration number SMK 886 DK stopped at the bus stop to pick her. “As he drove along, he picked another passenger on Kudirat Abiola Way. Mrs Adebimpe Akinsola, the Permanent Secretary and also the Acting Commissioner for the Ministry, disclosed this in Lagos on Sunday. She said that any hotel operating without displaying a sign-post was operating illegally. “It is an offence for a hotel to be operating without signage. The state government is committed to monitor and hunt any hotel operating without a sign-post. “Any hotel found wanting will be brought to book and face the punishment,” she said. Akinsola said that the move was to checkmate the activities of the hotels in order to rid the state of criminality. “Some criminals are fond of using some of the unregistered hotels to carry out their evil deeds. “Therefore, it is necessary to check such vices by clamping down on such illegal hotels. Sokoto Govt frees 20 prison inmates

Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto state gov Sokoto State Government on Sunday paid N2 million fines on behalf of 20 inmates to enable the offenders regain their freedom from prison. Each of the freed inmates of Sokoto Central Prison also received N2,000 as transport money from the state government. Gov. Aminu Tambuwal said that the gesture was part of his administration’s efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the beneficiaries. Tambuwal, who was represented by the Commissioner of Rural Development, Alhaji Abdullahi Maigwandu, warned the freed inmates against involvement in any acts capable of taking them back to prison. Tambuwal said: ”You should go back to school or get involved in meaningful ventures, to be useful to ourselves and the society.” Speaking at the occasion, Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Mani Maishinko, said that the gesture was part of the of the state government’s responsibilities to its citizens. Sokoto Govt donates N35m materials to schools, mosques

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State Sokoto State Government on Sunday donated 80 wireless communication equipment, 10,000 mudus (means of measurement) and 8,000 rubber mats worth N35million to Islamiyya schools/organisations, mosques and preachers. Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state said the gesture was to ensure adequate measurement of goods and services so that unsuspecting customers were not cheated. Tambuwal, represented by Commissioner for Rural Development, Alhaji Abdullahi Maigwandu, said the items would facilitate the activities of the beneficiaries. He urged the beneficiaries to use the facilities for the purposes they were meant for. Army Council approves establishment of 8th Division

Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto state gov The Nigerian Army Council has approved the establishment of its 8th Division in Sokoto. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Yusuf Buratai, disclosed this in Sokoto on Sunday. Buratai spoke during a condolence visit to Gov. Aminu Tambuwal over the recent demise of the 18th Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki. The COAS said that officers and men of the new Division were, however, currently operating in the North East. ”As soon the security situation in that region is fully stabilized, the Division would move to Sokoto. ”The move is part of efforts to provide sustainable peace and unity in Nigeria and the Nigerian Army is fully committed to ensuring this,” he added. Policeman nabbed over death of driver

Nigeria-police A policeman, who allegedly killed a driver and injured another on Tegina – Lagos road, has been arrested by the Niger State Police Command. The command’s spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna that investigation into the incident had commenced. “The policeman in question has been arrested and detained as the Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, has ordered for an in-depth investigation into the case. “The policeman will be tried in police orderly room,” said the police spokesman. He re-assured that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted according to the law and urged residents to remain calm as investigation continued into the incident.

300 men, women to participate in Quranic competition

NUJ backs review of N18,000 national minimum wage

NUJ The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Sunday backed agitation for urgent upward review of the N18, 000 national minimum wage. The union’s stand was contained in an 11-point communiqué issued at the end of its quarterly National Executive Council meeting held in Owerri, Imo State. The communiqué noted that the current minimum wage was too meagre to accommodate the daily needs of workers and urged the Federal Government to review it upward. “The minimum wage is no longer in tandem with prevailing economic realities because of the high cost of living in the country. “Government should urgently review upward the present minimum wage of N18, 000,” it said. The NUJ also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently declare a state of emergency to fix the deplorable state of roads in the country. Akeredolu after winning in his polling booth The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally declared Mr Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of last Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State. Akeredolu polled 244, 842 to beat his closest rival, Eyitayo Jegede of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), who polled 150, 380, while Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy, (AD) followed with a distant third of 126, 889 votes.
