SON impounds 30,000 pieces of steel bars in Kwara

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has impounded 30,000 pieces of steel bars of different brands and sizes in 20 different shops in Kwara. The State’s Coordinator of SON, Mr Sunday Yashim, who led the raid, said the steel bars did not meet standard specifications and qualities. Responding to complaints of the traders, Yashim said that traders had a role to play in ensuring that markets are free of substandard products. “Whatever steel that you buy, you find out that each steel bar has a code on it, we did that to enable us trace the manufacturers. “But we have found ourselves in a situation, where after correcting and guiding them on what to do; they still go ahead to produce steel bars that did not meet the required standards. “That is why we feel that it is necessary to find out what is in the market, because the sellers themselves do not help matters. “They buy these steel bars knowing that they are not of good quality and they never bother to come to SON to complain,

Juan Mata Everton are trying to convince Juan Mata to join Ronald Koeman’s revolution at Goodison Park, with the Spain international aware that he has no future at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho. The 28- year-old is not in the plans of Mourinho who sold him to United in January 2014 during his second spell at Chelsea. The new United manager’s view of the attacking midfielder has not changed from two years ago when he regarded him as too slow to be at the heart of the attacking element of his team. The Spain international was not included in his country’s Euro 2016 squad and last played for his country in the friendly against England last November. Wole Soyinka mourns Elechi Amadi

Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has described the Late Captain Elechi Amadi as a soldier and poet, a captive of conscience. Read Soyinka’s statement mourning the writer: ELECHI AMADI Adieu, Elechi Amadi, soldier and poet, captive of conscience, human solidarity and justice. Elechi is gone, but creativity remains as consolation, honouring its faithful servitors and filling us with gratitude for their passage. I recall those enraged, agonizing hours when the peace and sanctuary of his home were violated by kidnappers, mulled over the treasured moments I spent with him in the intimacy of his living room. It seemed unconscionable that, having survived a Civil War, he should now be subjected to the sadism, disrespect and greed of a handful – and of course, of the failure of overall society that he took to arms to rectify. Far from his home, I quietly celebrated his triumphal return. Now there are only memories of those sparse but quietly congenia
