Boy, 14 flees Jos, rescues in Lagos

The rescued boy A 14-year old boy, Israel Solomon, who fled his parent’s home in Jos was on Monday evening intercepted and rescued by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos Police Command at Ojota, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria. Solomon, a Birom by tribe, was seen wandering around Ojota Bus Stop, when the operatives decided to call him for questioning. He said that his parents lived at Mango Junction, Opposite Gada Biyu, Jos. The boy could not give reasons why he ran away from home. All entreaties to make him give reasons for his actions proved abortive. Solomon said the bus conveying him from Jos got to Lagos late on Sunday evening, adding that he passed the night under the foot bridge at the Ojodu Berger Bus Stop. Some Boko Haram agents arrested The Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday arrested four suspected fleeing members of the Boko Haram at Oko-Oba in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State. The DSS in a statement issued on Tuesday gave the names of the suspects as Fanayi Bukar Hassan, Butame Hassan, Kologoni Bukar, and Amina Abubakar. Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje The Kano State Government on Tuesday pledged to ensure prompt payment of workers salaries in spite of the current economic recession in the country. Kabul blast Afghanistan Health Ministry official said 25 people were killed while eyewitnesses said 70 were wounded in Tuesday’s suicide attack near the Afghan parliament building in Kabul. Recession: FCT landlords reduce rents

Following the present economic recessing facing the country, some house owners in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have reduced their house rents so that people can afford the houses. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that many houses in the FCT have remained unoccupied as many people can no longer afford to pay rents due to the harsh economic situation. NAN checks revealed that even the houses being occupied presently, tenants still find it difficult to renew their rents. Kerosene hits N350 per litre in Jigawa

Kerosene The lingering scarcity of kerosene in Hadejia and its environs has caused an increase in the price of the product to N350 per litre, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. NAN checks in Hadejia on Tuesday showed that most petrol stations had run out of supply of the product. It also showed that the commodity was only available in black market outlets where the product is being sold at N350 per litre, as against the N83 approved pump price. Black-market operators were seen making brisk businesses due to high patronage occasioned by the scarcity of the products. Some consumers who spoke to NAN said that the situation had exposed them to hardships. Auwalu Abdu, a resident, said his family had experienced difficulties in sourcing the product. Ex-Gov. Shema in court for funds misappropriation

Alhaji Ibrahim Shema, former governor of Katsina State The immediate former governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema, has appeared in court for alleged financial misappropriation during his tenure as governor. Shema was arraigned before Justice Ibrahim Bako by the Katsina state government and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday. He, however, did not take plea. Earlier, EFCC counsel, Jibrin Samuel (SAN), had urged the court to remand Shema in prison so that they could have access to him at will. Samuel asked that the administrative bail earlier given to Shema be revoked, saying he had shown some signs of not reporting to the commission. The defence counsel, Joseph Daudu, however, objected to the prayer of the EFFC counsel to have his client remanded in prison custody. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Victoria Bob-Manuel, said that they were freed in line with the plea of the complainant, who is a man of God. “Having pleaded guilty to the two count charge of conspiracy and stealing, the three accused persons are hereby convicted. “But going by the prayer of the complainant, who is a man of God, the court hereby yields to the mercy pleaded by the complainant and they are discharged and acquitted. “The offences they committed attract minimum of seven years imprisonment each, but they should thank God and the complainant who has shown open heart,” she said. The victim’s father, Terlanga Ugba, told journalists at the hospital in Makurdi on Monday that his daughter left home at about 11 a.m. on January 5 to buy some tailoring materials for her sewing work but never returned. Nnamdi Kanu There is a heavy security presence at the Federal High Court, venue of the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. Mr. Kanu’s trial was abruptly suspended on December 13 after he and other defendants angrily challenged the court’s decision to allow the use of “protected” witnesses. Mr Kanu, and three others, David Nwawuisi, Benjamin Madubugwu and Chidiebere Onwudiwe, are accused of treasonable felony. The judge, Binta Nyako, had ruled in December that witnesses would be allowed some degree of protection. “The counsels and the defendants will see the witnesses. The witnesses will have special entrances to and outside the court,” the judge said. Mrs Nyako also said the court would allow the witnesses to be shielded with screen-guards. She said the court would set aside two days for rehearsals on how the witnesses will come into the court and depart from the court. court-of-law A housewife, Mrs Olamide Bola, on Tuesday, told an Akure Customary Court, that her husband, Mr Ogunlana Bola had sex with her daughter more than once. The complainant is seeking divorce of her 5-year-old marriage that produced a 4-year-old boy. According to her, she can no longer tolerate the respondent’s wild sexual urge towards her and her 11-year-old daughter. The 11-year-old girl is a stepdaughter to the respondent. The complainant who wept in court regretted her marriage with the respondent. Ruling on the case, Mr Ayodele Omotola, the court’s president ordered hearing notice to be served on the respondent for appearance on the next adjourned date. Doctors in Rivers’ hospitals embark on indefinite strike

Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors protesting in Abuja, recently Baring any last minute intervention by the Rivers State Government, medical doctors in Rivers State will start an indefinite strike today to press home their demand for improved health facilities and adequate manpower. The aggrieved doctors under the aegies of the National Association of Government Medical and Dental Practitioners in Rivers State said they are embarking on strike to protest the state government’s refusal to employ doctors and health personnel. Dr. Sofiri Peterside, who spoke on behalf of the aggrieved doctors said the strike is the only avenue left to press home their demands. Peterside disclosed that doctors had earlier given a 21-day ultimatum that elapsed on January 9, 2017. The doctors also claimed that some medical practitioners’ gratuities and pensions were not fully paid and the government refused to implement the new salary structure. Lawyers In a move to raise the bar for Nigerian lawyers, the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA is seeking to make the study of law a second degree course in Nigerian Universities. The idea was one of the issues contained in the agenda before a committee convoked by the national body of lawyers to find lasting solution to the seemingly low standard of legal profession in the country. Group urges Adeboye to rescind resignation as G.O.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye The Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has called on Pastor Enoch Adeboye to rescind his resignation as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). The call came in a statement issued by the Executive Director of the Abuja-based human rights group, Mr Frank Tietie, on Tuesday. Tietie said CASER would seek a court order to compel Adeboye to reverse his decision should the “holy man of God’’ refuse to voluntarily do so. Yahoo Yahoo Inc said that it would rename itself Altaba Inc and Chief Executive Officer Marissa Mayer would step down from the board after the closing of its deal with Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N). Yahoo has a deal to sell its core internet business, which includes its digital advertising, email and media assets, to Verizon for 4.83 billion dollars. The terms of that deal could be amended – or the transaction may even be called off – after Yahoo last year disclosed two separate data breaches; one involving some 500 million customer accounts and the second involving over a billion.
