Family planning not for Muslims-Turkey President

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said no Muslim family should use birth control or engage in family planning, saying the practices violate Muslim traditions. “We will multiply our descendants. They talk about population planning, birth control. No Muslim family can have such an approach,” he said Monday in a televised speech, monitored by Voice of America, VOA. Erdogan, a devout Muslim, has angered women’s groups in the past by dictating how many children a woman should have and speaking against gender equality. He has previously attempted to ban abortion in the country and has called for limits on Caesarean births, saying women who give birth that way generally cannot have more than one more child.

US happy over life sentence for ex-Chadian President

The U.S. on Monday welcomed the Extraordinary African Chambers’ (CAE) sentencing of former Chadian President, Hissene Habre to life in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Habre was also convicted of charges of murder, torture, rape, and sexual slavery and sentenced to life in prison. U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry in a statement by State Department in New York, said the ruling was a landmark in the global fight against impunity for atrocities. The statement said Habre’s crimes were numerous, calculated, and grave. According to the statement, beginning in 1982, Habre’s eight-year term as the president of Chad is marked by large-scale systematic violations. It said Habre committed murder of an estimated 40,000 people, widespread sexual violence, mass imprisonment, enforced disappearance, and torture. Marathoner completes 717kms trek from Abuja-Lagos

Fadesola Adebayo, the Canadian-based Nigerian marathoner, who began a 717km-long trek against the spread of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) from Abuja on May 13 finished at about 1.30p.m., on Monday in Lagos. The marathoner, who ended his solo marathon at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, a suburb of Lagos, told newsmen that his efforts were bound to yield dividends to combat the SJS. Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a form of toxic epidermal necrolysis, is a life-threatening skin condition, in which cell death causes the epidermis to separate from the dermis. The syndrome is thought to be a hypersensitivity complex that affects the skin and the mucous membranes. The most well-known causes are certain medications (such as lamotrigine), but it can also be due to infections, or more rarely, cancers. 5 MASSOB members, 2 policemen killed in Asaba protest

Ralph Uwazurike: MASSOB members charged No fewer than seven persons have been confirmed dead following protest by members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), in Asaba on Monday. The Acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in Delta, SP Charles Muka, who confirmed this in a statement, added that the police recorded two casualties. He said in the statement that five members of MASSOB were killed by military officers who had confrontations with the group along the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway in Asaba. Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader Mohamed Badie jailed for life

Mohamed Badie An Egyptian criminal court on Monday handed down a life sentence to the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood along with 35 other members of the outlawed Islamist group, a state-run news agency reported. Mohamed Badie, the group’s “Supreme Guide,” was among those found guilty of engaging in violent acts in the northeastern governorate of Ismailia in the wake of protests over the 2013 ouster of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, Egypt’s state-run MENA reported. The court found the men guilty of killing three citizens in Ismailia governorate and attempting to kill 16 others, and attempting to occupy an official building in July 2013, Egyptian state media agency Al-Ahram reported. Morsy, an Islamist, was elected President in June 2012 in the country’s first free elections, following the overthrow of dictator Hosni Mubarak more than a year earlier. Police nab 13 suspected IPOB members in Enugu

Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB leader and Director at Biafra Radio No fewer than 13 suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were on Monday arrested by the Police for alleged unlawful protest in Enugu. The Enugu Police spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu disclosed that the suspects were arrested on Obiagu Road in the Coal City, while commemorating `Biafran fallen heroes and heroines of the 1967-1970 civil war’. He said they were apprehended with flags of Biafra. Amaraizu said the command had embarked on a surveillance of the state following reports of planned protests. He urged members of the public to report any form of illegal assemblies in their areas.

Ramadan: NASFAT warns traders against exploitation during fast

The Deputy National Missioner of NASFAT, Alhaji Abdulazeez Onike, has advised traders against unnecessary and unjust inflation of prices of food stuffs during the Ramadan. Onike said this during a news conference by the organisation in Ikeja to announce its programme for this year’s holy month. Muslims faithful usually observe a 30-day period of fasting during Ramadan. Man killed for refusing to charge friend’s phone

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a bricklayer, Demola Wasiu, for allegedly killing his 27-year-old friend, Lekan Omotosho. Wasiu reportedly stabbed the victim in the armpit after he refused to charge his phone for him. Policemen from the Lion Building Division according to reports have arrested Wasiu, an indigene of Ede, Osun State on Saturday and the case was subsequently transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, SDCI, Yaba. At the SDCI, the suspect begged for forgiveness, saying he never intended to kill Omotosho. Wasiu speaking said, “All I want is forgiveness. I did not mean to kill him. A fight broke out between policemen and some people suspected to be members of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in Asaba on Monday, eyewitnesses said. The incident occurred along Anwai Road in the city when MASSOB members were marching to demand for the independence of Biafra. Witnesses said some persons, including policemen, injured in the fracas, were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba. A nurse at the FMC, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that some of the injured were brought to the hospital. An eyewitness, Mr Uche Okelue, disclosed that the fracas broke out after a police team threw teargas at the marchers in an effort to disperse them. “The police used teargas on the MASSOB people as they were protesting along Anwai Road this morning, so the people got angry and attacked the policemen with knives and broken bottles. “They caught one policeman, beat him up before stabbing him to death; it was a fierce confrontation as everyone ran in different di

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State The Sokoto State Government is to employ no fewer than 10,000 qualified teachers, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of the state has disclosed. Tambuwal made the disclosure on Monday at a media chat organised to mark the 2016 Democracy Day in Sokoto. The governor said this was part of the recommendations in a report of a technical committee he had earlier set up to advise the government on the education sector. Civil servants to undergo severe penalty for corrupt practices

A unionist, Mr Oluwaseyi Gambo, on Monday urged the Federal Government to introduce a stiffer penalty against civil servants found to be corrupt to serve as deterrents to others. Gambo, a former national public relations officer (PRO) of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staffs Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) gave the advice in Lagos. According to him, civil servants who were found wanting should be exposed, adding that they should not be allowed to also benefit from pension and gratuity. 7 MASSOB members arrested in Owerri

The police in Owerri on Monday arrested some 17 members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) for holding a road show in commemoration of 49th anniversary of Biafra. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the arrests, said those arrested would be prosecuted. The MASSOB members began the march at Waterside Primary School, Owerri, from where they moved to Rotibi Street to Oguamana Street before linking Douglas Road. At Douglas Road the marchers met heavily armed security men, who threw teargas at them at Ama JK end of the street and arrested some. Organizers of the Miss Nollywood Beauty Pageant have announced the dethronement of one of their queen, Grace Okoro Adaeze. Grace Okoro Adaeze, who was Miss Nollywood Culture and Tourism 2016, has been dethroned over arrogant behaviour and her nonchalant attitude which she reportedly displayed towards her organisation. A special court in Senegal has convicted former Chadian military ruler Hissene Habre of rape as the verdict was still read for other possible convictions. Human rights groups accuse the 72-year-old of being responsible for the deaths of 40,000 people during his rule from 1982 to 1990. Prosecutors in the court case said he committed crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture, and were perusing a life sentence for Habre. His case is being heard by the Extraordinary African Chambers in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, a special criminal court set up by the African Union within the West African nation’s court system. Robbers kill lecturer, Cameroonian in Gombe

Solomon Arase, Inspector General of Police The Police Command in Gombe State has confirmed that a gang of armed robbery suspects killed a lecturer and a Cameroonian at Kashere junction on the Gombe-Kumo Road. This is contained in a statement issued by DSP Ahmed Usman, the command spokesman, in Gombe on Monday. The statement disclosed that the incident occurred at about 11.45p.m., on Sunday night. It named the lecturer as Malam Sulaiman Umar of the Department of Arabic Studies, Federal University, Kashere and the Cameroonian as Malam Zainab Mahmuda without giving further details. The statement revealed that the suspected robbers were about eight in number, adding that investigation into the incident had commenced.

Three former players of Warri Wolves Football Club on Sunday in Umuahia confronted the club’s General Manager, Moses Etu, to demand for the payment of outstanding sign-on fees and match allowances. The former players, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu, Abdul Aziz and Joseph Osadiaye, are now with Enyimba International FC of Aba. But they were still owed by Warri Wolves, who were in Umuahia on Sunday for a rescheduled 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture against the Aba side. Trouble started at the Umuahia Township Stadium at the end of the Week 20 match when Ibenegbu accosted Etu during the post-match interview, demanding to be paid his money. “Where is my money? You must pay me my money today,” he shouted, looking ready for a complete showdown with Etu. “I do not owe you. It is Warri Wolves that owe you,” Etu had retorted, while making efforts to stave off the attack. Why I did not pay teachers at Tai Solarin College of Education-Amosun

Abiodun Onafuye/Abeokuta: Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has disclosed his reason for withholding the salary and emolument of the teachers and staff at the Tai Solarin College of Education, TASCE, Omu-Ijebu. The reason, according to the governor, is that he is not comfortable with the staff list submitted by the management of the school. Amosun disclosed that the number of both staff and non teaching staff of the College doubled the total number of students in the school. The governor made this disclosure and others during an interactive session with civil society groups to mark Democracy Day in the State. The event which was organised by the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, Ogun State council, held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta. The Nigerian delegation arrived from Rouen in France, where they beat Mali 1-0 on Friday in another friendly match. A statement by Ademola Olajire, Assistant Director of Communications, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on Sunday in Abuja said the Eagles arrived at noon on Sunday. “They are now at the Alvisse Parc Hotel, an impressive facility located on Route d’Echternach in Luxembourg City.’’ It said there was a great spirit in camp as players and officials looked forward to a win against Luxembourg. The statement disclosed that the team later trained at the Stade Josy Barthel, venue of Tuesday’s clash with Luxembourg.
