Kirsten Nematandani Former South African football boss Kirsten Nematandani was banned for five years by FIFA’s ethics committee on Thursday in connection with a match-fixing scandal involving his country’s national team in 2010. The global soccer body’s ethics watchdog also handed life bans to former Zimbabwe Football Association official Jonathan Musavengana and former Togo national team coach Banna Tchanile for alleged bribery and corruption violations connected to the same case. Nematandani, head of the South African Football Association (SAFA) from 2009 until 2013, had violated articles on general conduct, loyalty and disclosure, FIFA said. Musavengana and Tchanile breached rules on bribery and corruption and FIFA said that it would publish the terms of their decisions on its website as they had “failed to provide fax numbers”. US offers solution to Nigeria’s economic recession

Transformer fault throws Sokoto city into darkness

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State The breakdown of a 15 MVA electricity transformer has thrown most parts of Sokoto City and its environs into darkness. Investigations revealed that most parts of the city have been without power supply from the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO) in the past six days. Some of the affected areas include Kalambaina, Alkila, Bello Way, and Emir Yahayya, Gusau, Maiduguri and Abdullahi Fodio roads. The development has consequently crippled socio-economic activities. The residents who can afford to buy petroleum products have resorted to using power generators. They decried the situation, and appealed to the KAEDCO to step up actions to rectify the fault. The Spokesman for KAEDCO in Sokoto, Alhaji Umar Tambuwal, confirmed the blackout. Tambuwal said: ”Engineers of the company are working round the clock to restore power supply to the city and its environs as soon as possible.”

It was learnt that Akinbolade committed the offence after allegedly catching her husband having sex with his lover on their matrimonial bed. Nigeria-police Two men–Jamiu Salawu, 25, and Obadimu Gbemiga 43, –were on Thursday remanded by an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court for the attempted murder of a policeman. The duo, who had no fixed address, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted murder by shooting with a gun. The prosecutor, Insp Famous Edigue, told the court that the accused persons and others at large committed the offence on Feb. 7 at about 8:00pm at Ita- Ajala Iberekodo in Abeokuta. He alleged that the duo attempted to kill one police officer, Insp Olusoji Osonuga, by shooting him with a gun in the head. Edigue said the offence contravened sections 516 and 320 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006. The plea of the accused persons was not taken by court. A statement from the management of AEDC in Abuja on Thursday, Said that the installation of the meters was in line with its commitment to metering all the customers under its jurisdiction. It stated that the first phase of the exercise would begin with the installation of 5,000 meters for its customers in Lokoja, before the end of December. Magistrate-court A 28-year-old truck driver, Ralmon Ahmed, who allegedly knocked down and killed a man, was on Thursday granted N100,000 bail. An Ikeja Magistrate’s’ Court granted the bail, but ordered the accused to produce two sureties. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Alexander Komolafe, also ordered that one of the two sureties must be a civil servant on Grade Level 9 in Lagos State with evidence of three years tax payment as part of the bail conditions.
