EFCC arraigns banker, another over $1m fraud

Sada Adamu, suspected fraudster Two men, including a Diamond Bank employee, on Friday appeared in a Federal High Court, Abuja, charged with money laundering, false declaration of assets and fraud to the tune of one million dollars. Sada Adamu and Babatunde Faro, the bank worker, were arraigned before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Adamu was alleged to have made cash payment of the said sum exceeding the N5 million threshold stipulated by law, to Faro. According to the charge sheet, the accused committed the crime on March 2, 2016 by paying the money directly to Faro without passing through a financial institution. Babatunde Faro, the suspected fraudster The alleged offence is in breach of Section 1(a) of the Money Laundering Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 15(2)(b) of the same Act, the charge said. Skye Bank takes over Obat Oil depot over N2.1b debt

Obat Oil filling station A Federal High Court in Lagos has given Skye Bank Plc the legal backing to take over Obat Oil and Petroleum Ltd’s depot over an alleged N2.1 billion debt. Justice Jude Dagat asked the Inspector-General of Police, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police to assist in the enforcement of the order. The order followed an Originating Motion by the bank seeking the enforcement of an arbitral award dated Aug. 7, 2015. Skye Bank had sought to recover a debt of N2. 1billion owed it by Obat Oil and Petroleum. The loan was guaranteed by Oba (Dr.) Frederick Akinruntan. The bank further sought to recover 15 per cent interest on the amount from April 2014 till the liquidation of the debt. The case was taken before an arbitrator, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), during which Obat Oil and Dr. Akinruntan appealed for concessions and waivers on the amount of accrued interest. Armed robbers kill bank manager, 3 others in Ekiti

Those killed in the bank A manager with Heritage Bank, a cashier and two other persons were killed on Friday in a robbery incident in Otun Ekiti, headquarters of Moba Local Government Area of Ekiti. The other persons killed by the robbers included a security guard attached to the palace of the paramount ruler of the town, Oba Adedapo Popoola, and another security guard attached to Unity Bank. An undisclosed sum of money was carted away from the Heritage Bank branch in the town during the incident. South African power utility chief resigns over bribe

President Zuma The chief executive of South Africa’s state-owned power utility Eskom on Friday announced his resignation after a report by an anti-graft watchdog implicated him in influence-peddling. Brian Molefe said he would step down on January 1, stressing “this act is not an admission of wrongdoing on my part.” “It is rather what I feel to be the correct thing to do in the interests of the company and corporate governance,’’ Molefe said in a statement. Molefe’s resignation followed a report by former anti-graft ombudsman Thuli Madonsela, who called for an investigation into the so-called “state capture” by the Gupta business family, known to be close to President Jacob Zuma. Saraki’s visit to the Villa was the third in one week since the Senate rejected the president’s 29.9 billion dollars foreign loan request. The meeting between the president and Saraki lasted about two hours. On November 4, Saraki had a meeting with Buhari after joining him in Jumat prayers at the State House Mosque. He also met with the president on Wednesday. Saraki, who briefly spoke to State House correspondents after the meeting, pleaded with Nigerians not to politicise the rejection of the loan request by the Senate. Faleke cries out over attempt to assassinate him

James Faleke A member of the House of Representatives, Mr. James Abiodun Faleke, has raised an alarm over attempt to assassinate him by gunmen along Lokoja-Abuja highway last Sunday. In a statement released by his spokesman, Duro Meseko on Friday, Faleke said he was nearly killed around 7pm that day by gunmen. Faleke who was the running mate to Alhaji Abubakar Audu, deceased governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State, disclosed that the gunmen fired severally at his car but the bullet did not penetrate because his vehicle was bulletproof. Nigeria-police Benue State Police Command on Friday denied that it declared the state commissioner for Art, Culture and Tourism, Mr Sekar Iyortyom, wanted over alleged culpable homicide. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Moses Yamu, made the denial in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi. Traders protest higher taxes in Kuje

Traders Association in Kuje Area Council, FCT on Friday took to the streets to protest the increase in taxation by the authorities. A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who monitored the protest in Kuje reports that shops along major streets in the council were shut. Mr Uche Nwokedi, the acting chairman of the association said members of the association had taken to the streets to protest increment in taxation from N3,000 to N36,000. Nwokedi said the protest was also to express the association’s displeasure over the use of force and touts by the consultant engaged by the Area Council to collect the taxes. PHED announces N2.2bn monthly loss

Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) said on Friday it lost N2.2 billion in revenue to unpaid bills and electricity wastage by consumers. The Managing Director of 4Power, owners of PHED, Mr Matthew Edevbie, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that 90 percent of meters in homes were by-passed which was partly responsible for the revenue loss. “In Port Harcourt for example, every 100 units of electricity that comes to our electricity network, we collect only 25 per cent equivalent of money. “Even when we install meters in homes, about 90 percent of the meters are usually by-passed. “For every N1 billion worth of electricity PHED brings to this region, every month we get N450 million and lose N550 million. “PHED’s supply of electricity to four states is in excess of N4 billion every month, meaning that we lose N2.2 billion worth of investment funds on monthly basis,” he said. Lagos State University Authorities of the Lagos State University (LASU) have suspended the institution’s Acting Director of Sports, Dr John Adeogun, for allegedly relinquishing his official responsibilities. The suspension is contained in the university’s official bulletin, obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos. The bulletin said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, had approved an immediate suspension of Adeogun. court The Police on Friday arraigned 25-year-old bricklayer, Clinton Otobo, at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, for an allegedly robbing his victim of N339,000. The accused, who lives in an uncompleted building at Lekki Garden Site, Phase 5, a suburb of Lagos is being tried for conspiracy and robbery. The prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi told the court that the offences were committed on July 12 at Road 15, Alabeku Ogombo, Ajah, a suburb of Lagos. Perezi said the accused and others at large, went to the complainant Mr Oshiro Ernest apartment at midnight and robbed him of his belongings. “Some the items stolen included mobile phones, two Ipad phones and N150,000 cash, all valued at N339,000,” he said. Taraba vaccinates 956,875 children against polio

Polio Immunization Taraba Commissioner of Health, Dr Innocent Vakkai, said on Friday that 956,875 children in the state were vaccinated against poliomyelitis under the Third Polio Outbreak Response Campaign. Vakkai spoke in Ardo-Kola at the launching of the Fourth Polio Outbreak Response Campaign. According to him, the state was selected for the campaign, as Taraba was among the states with the high risk of contracting polio. 22-year-old student remanded in prison

Corps member feared dead in Bayelsa boat mishap

National Youth Service Corp members A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member is feared drowned in a boat accident on Thursday in Okpotuwari Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa. NURTW tells members to obey traffic rules, regulations

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Gombe State Chapter, has urged its members to always obey traffic rules and regulations in order to reduce road accidents. The accused, a businessman, who lives at 16, Ashobe St., Dopemu, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for obtaining by false pretext and stealing. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi said that the offences were committed at Egbeda, Lagos, on Jan. 12, 2013 Perezi said that the accused collected N1million from one Mr Kunle Fasuyi under the pretext of procuring a Qatar Visa for him. “Since then he was nowhere to be found; all efforts of the complainant to see him failed until he was sighted and apprehended,” he said. The offences contravened Sections 278 and 312(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused pleaded not guilty. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Layinka, granted the accused a bail of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum. She adjourned the case to Dec. 5 for mention.
