Nigerian trafficking boss on trial in Europe

A female trafficking boss used witchcraft to round up and terrify dozens of teenage orphans from Nigeria before selling them into prostitution in Europe, a court heard on Tuesday. Franca Asemota, aka Aunty Franca Franca Asemota, known to her victims as ‘Auntie Franca’, used Heathrow as a hub to traffic at least 40 children and young adults into Europe, a jury was told. It was also claimed that Franca and her gang managed to snatch back two girls who had been rescued and put in foster care in Worthing, East Sussex. She is accused of luring mainly orphans from remote Nigerian villages with the promise of jobs and education. But the 38-year-old would then use witchcraft, threats, ‘Ju-Ju’ rituals and sexual violence to ensure they did as they were told before being sold to the sex industry in Europe, it was said. The trafficking first came to light when Border Agency officials stopped two groups, one in September and one in November 2011, travelling on false passports, Isleworth Crow

UPDATE: Pistorius sentenced to six years for murdering girlfriend

South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius was on Wednesday sentenced to six years in jail for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home three years ago. High Court judge Thokozile Masipa listed several mitigating factors for sentencing him to less than half the minimum 15-year term for murder, including the athlete’s claim he believed he was shooting an intruder. “The sentence that I impose on the accused… is six years imprisonment,” she said. Pistorius, 29, hugged his family before being taken out of the court in Pretoria to begin serving his term. The double-amputee Olympic and Paralympic sprinter was freed from prison last October after serving one year of a five-year term for culpable homicide — the equivalent of manslaughter. But an appeals court upgraded his conviction to murder in December. Pistorius shot Steenkamp, a model, in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013, saying he mistook her for a burglar when he fired four times through the door of his bedroom

Oscar Pistorius in court for sentencing

South African Paralympic gold medalist Oscar Pistorius arrived in court on Wednesday for sentencing for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, bringing the curtain down on a trial that gripped the world. Dressed in a dark suit, the 29-year-old hugged members of his legal team in the packed Pretoria court room. He then took his seat and was seen tapping away on his mobile phone. Pistorius was found guilty of murdering Steenkamp by an appeals court last December. He had initially received a five-year sentence for a manslaughter conviction in 2014, a ruling derided by women’s groups as too lenient. The athlete had the lower part of his legs amputated when he was a baby and his lawyers have argued that his disability and mental stress should be considered as mitigating circumstances to reduce his sentence. The state says he has shown no remorse and has called for him to receive no less than the minimum 15-year sentence for murder. The original trial judge, Thokozile Masip
