Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari is ill, flown to UK

President Muhammadu Buhari and Abba Kyari The Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mallam Abba Kyari, is ill. A top government official confirmed this to Daily Trust correspondent Friday night. The official, who spoke under strict condition of anonymity, said that Kyari was flown to the United Kingdom (UK) on Thursday. He, however, added that the chief of staff “is now stable” as he was responding to treatment. The official declined comment on the nature of Kyari’s ailment. According to the official, Kyari has since Friday been speaking to people in Nigeria. Buhari approves appointment of Bage, Galinje as Justices of S/Court

President Muhammadu Buhari President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday approved the appointment of Justices Sidi Bage and Paul Galinje, as Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC). Mr Soji Oye, the council’s Acting Director of Information, made the disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Abuja. Oye said the two Justices would be sworn-in by Justice Walter Onnoghen, the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) on December 5. Bage and Galinje are from Nasarawa and Taraba state respectively.

14 dead, 8 houses burnt in petrol tanker fire in Niger

File Photo: Petrol tanker fire where many were burnt to death Fourteen persons in Tegina town in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger state, on Friday, lost their lives as a result of a fire caused by a petrol tanker. It was gathered that the tanker was conveying petrol from Lagos to Kaduna when the driver lost control and rammed his vehicle into some residential buildings in the town. Eight houses were completely burnt in the fire that ensued. The fire claimed the lives of the people who were trapped in the buildings and others selling by the roadside. An eye witness said that the eight houses were completely burnt while properties valued at millions of naira including vehicles were destroyed in the inferno. The eye witness, who requested anonymity, said that five persons who sustained injury were currently receiving treatment at Tegina General Hospital. Reckless drivers kill 70 FRSC officials

Boboye Oyeyemi At least, 70 officials of the Federal Road Safety Corp, FRSC, were killed this year by reckless drivers across the country. The Corps Marshal, FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi disclosed this on Friday in Abuja. Speaking at the end of the year’s management strategy session, Oyeyemi stated that the officials were killed while on duty, noting that the figure was lower than 2015 which stood at 160. The FRSC boss said the corp would fight reckless drivers in the country as they were responsible for about 40 per cent of deaths of its officials. He said he had been raising this alarm since last year that the corps was experiencing increase in violence among drivers and lawlessness, saying that losing 70 personnel was not a joke. Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, Inspector General of Police The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Ibrahim Idris, has set up a special panel to investigate issues surrounding the payment of entitlements of personnel engaged in adhoc duties. Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Don Awunah, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Friday. Awunah said the move followed “the delay, omission and discrepancies in payment of allowances to officers” who participated in the just-concluded gubernatorial election in Ondo State. He said the panel would also look into “complaints of irregularities from certain quarters and discoveries of possible anomalies and plausible foul play’’, which were of deep concern to the I-G. According to him, the panel is empowered to investigate the entire payment system, streamline and enhance payment of entitlements of the affected personnel. Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State The Skylarks’ Club of Omu Aran, headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara, says it will award N200,000 scholarship to each winner of the community-organised mini-marathon. Police cell A 35-year-old security man, Jacob Ishi, who allegedly drove dangerously and damaged a car worth N3 million, was on Friday arraigned in an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. Ishi, a resident of No. 3, Oloko St., Sangotedo, Ajah, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of dangerous driving and driving without a licence. The prosecutor, Sgt. Oladejo Balogun, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Nov. 25, at 5.25 p.m., at Jeremiah Street, Lekki Phase 1, Eti-Osa LGA, Lagos. He said that the accused drove one Toyota Sienna car with registration No. LAGOS AAA 831 DE in a public highway without a driver’s licence. Balogun also said that the accused drove the said vehicle on the highway dangerously and damaged the vehicle which is valued at N3 million. He said the vehicle belonged to one Mr Emmanuel Uti. Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State A total of 6, 346 youths have been recruited for the Federal Government’s NPower jobs in Kaduna State. At one of the screening centres at the Kaduna Agricultural Development Project office, an official said that the successful candidates would be posted after an aptitude test to be conducted next week. Governor-Ifeanyi-Okowa of Delta State The Delta Government said on Friday that it has trained no fewer than 2000 unemployed youths on digital online jobs. The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr Joyce Overah stated this in Asaba during a ministerial press briefing. Overah said that the training was conducted in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology and the Rockefeller Foundation USA. He said the aim was to provide the youths skills for digital online jobs and also reduce redundancy and idleness among them. According to him, a social meet-up event for software developers was also organised for the youths in partnership with Google Developers Group to equip them with latest skills in software development. Man docked for escaping from lawful custody

court The police on Friday arraigned 33-year-old applicant, Kallamu Yahaya, in a Wuse Zone 2 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly escaping from lawful custody. The defendant, a resident of Mpape, Abuja, is standing trial on a two-count charge of theft and escape from lawful custody. Prosecutor Gambo Musa told the court that one Ibrahim Bashir of Banex Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja, reported the matter at the Wuse Police Station on Nov. 23. Musa said that the defendant stole the complainant’s iPhone valued at N105,000, which was later recovered from the defendant by the police. He said that while the defendant was at the police station, he escaped with handcuffs, but was later re-arrested by the police and taken back to the police station.
