Buhari congratulates APC stalwart, Akande

Chief Abdukareem Adebisi Akande President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated elder statesman and founding Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Abdukareem Adebisi Akande, as he turns 78 years on Jan. 16. Some stakeholders in the entertainment and creative industry on Sunday advised the Federal Government to resuscitate the moribund textile industries across the country so that they could produce and promote high grade and high-quality made-in-Nigeria fabrics. Popular Nollywood actress Buky Wright, Mrs Yeside Laguda, Mr Bayo Balogun and an ex-lawmaker, Mr Bashiru Bolarinwa, gave the advice on Sunday in Lagos. 12 passengers killed as bus plunges into river

The vehicle inside the river Over 12 persons have reportedly died in an accident on Oyo/Ogbomoso Road after a commercial bus skidded off the road and plunged into Odo-Oba River. An eyewitness told the Punch newspaper that the accident occurred when the bus was trying to avoid a head on collision with another vehicle that lost control and veered off its lane. The Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Yusuf Salami and the Police Public Relations Officer, of the State Command, SP Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the accident. Gunmen demandsN1.2b for kidnapped students and teachers The abductors of students and members of staff of the Nigeria Turkish International College (NTIC) have demanded N1.2bn ransom for the victims to be released, it was learnt. Reports say the abductors called a family member of one of the victims on Sunday to make the demand. The police authorities confirmed that the gunmen invaded the school now changed to Tulip International School, and took the students and the teachers away in a white Toyota Hilux vehicle. Troops rescue 58 people in 2 days

Nigerian soldiers Troops operating in the North-East have rescued 58 people abducted by terrorists in the last two days, including 35 women and 23 children. The Director of Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Sunday that the victims were rescued during raids carried out by 112 Task Force Battalion of 22 Brigade of the Operation Lafiya Dole. Usman said the raids, patrols and clearance operations were carried out by the troops in conjunction with civilian JTF in villages and towns in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno. He identified those villages as Awada, Sinbaya, Agutari, Kirinari, Gubdori and Yale, Kajeri and Boskoro. Usman also said that during the period 13 insurgents were neutralised by troops, adding that two terrorists were arrested. President Buhari, Osinbajo, others remember fallen heroes

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday in Abuja led government officials and service chiefs to lay wreaths in honour of Nigerian soldiers who died in active service. President Muhammadu Buhari Worried by the security situation at the nation’s airports, an aviation security expert, Dr Niama Fraser, has urged the Federal Government to upgrade the airports in line with international aviation organisations’ security regulations. Charcoal The Borno State Government said on Sunday that it had banned the sale of charcoal and firewood on major streets in the metropolis to prevent pollution in the city. Alhaji Kakashehu Lawan, the Commissioner for Justice, disclosed this in a statement made available in Maiduguri. Lawan said that sellers of the commodities were expected to relocate to a new market on Damboa Road designated for the sale of charcoal and firewood. “Sales of charcoal and firewood along major streets is hereby banned. “All those engaged in the business should relocate to the Charcoal and Firewood market along Damboa Road in Maiduguri,” he said. Lawan gave a two-week notice to all sellers to either relocate to the market or face prosecution. Oranges Some orange sellers at the popular orange market at Mararaba, Nasarawa State on Sunday decried scarcity of oranges, attributing it to transportation and strike by wholesalers nationwide. However, orange dealers in Benue attributed the scarcity of oranges in markets to high cost of the commodity, transportation and multiple taxation. According to some sellers and dealers in Lafia and Makurdi respectively, the problem began when indigenous farmers stopped the marketers from buying directly on their farms. Zamfara Govt to construct 160 toilets, 581 boreholes

Gov-Shinkafi-of-Zamfara The Zamfara government says it is constructing 160 blocks of public toilets, 580 boreholes in public schools and hospitals as part of its efforts to ensure Open Defecation Free (ODF) in the state. Projects would be executed under Sanitation, Hygiene and Water in Nigeria (SHAWN II) a UNICEF/DFID intervention programme. NAN further reports that Zamfara is one of the six states benefiting from SHWAN projects in the country which aimed at improving sanitation, hygiene and water supply in the rural communities inline with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Nigerian soldiers The Nigerian Army on Sunday said soldiers killed 13 suspected Boko Haram members during clearance operations in Bomboshe and Sinbaya in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno. Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, the Director of Army Public Relations, said in a statement in Maiduguri that the operations were carried out on Thursday and Friday. 50 companies bid for NNPC’s boat supply

NNPC-logo A total of 50 companies recently submitted bids to partake in the provision of sea worthy Tug boats on charter time basis for the maritime operational requirements of the NNPC in Lagos, Warri and Port Harcourt. The public bid which was held at the Abuja Corporate Headquarters of the corporation had in attendance representatives of the bidding companies with officials of the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP, Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, and some members of the civil society as observers. Successful companies would be engaged on a two year term contract in the first instance with an option of renewal for a further one year.
