LASG shuts Akin Adesola Street for One Lagos Fiesta

Anofiu Elegushi The Lagos State Government has announced the closure of Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island on Saturday as from 4.00pm for the One Lagos Fiesta. A statement from the Ministry of Transportation, issued by Biola Fagunwa, Director, Public Affairs said the closure was to facilitate the “One Lagos Fiesta” scheduled to hold at the Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island. While assuring that adequate traffic management would be provided, the statement regreted any inconvenience that the closure might cause any would be motorist or commuter. The statement further added that the closure would only last till the early hours of 1st January, 2017.

Dogs disappear from streets as Ekiti residents turn to dog meat

Dog meat Dogs have disappeared from the streets in Ekiti State following rise in the consumption of dog meat by residents, a check by the News Agency of Nigeria [NAN] has shown. NAN reports that more people have increasingly turned to dog meat for their nutrition in spite of the taboo hitherto associated with the consumption of dog meat in the community. In Ado-Ekiti, Ikere-Ekiti, Ise-Ekiti, Emure- Ekiti, Ikole-Ekiti and Otun Ekiti new dog slaughter slabs have sprung up as the residents devour the meat in homes, restaurants and beer parlours. A resident said no fewer than 20 of such slaughter slabs exist in Ado Ekiti alone. “A good number of beer parlours and relaxation centres now make pepper soup and suya from dog meat. “Because of the high rate of consumption of dog meat, it is now difficult to see dogs on the street and their cost have risen astronomically,” the resident, who craved anonymity said. Army arrest 1,240 Boko Haram suspects in Sambisa

Nigerian soldiers The Nigeria Army said it had arrested about 1,240 suspected Boko Haram terrorists during a mop-up operation by troops inside the Sambisa forest. Maj. -Gen. Lucky Irabor, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, disclosed this while giving update to newsmen on Operation Rescue Final at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri. Irabor said that 413 of the suspects were adults; 323 were female adults; 251 male children, while 253 were female children. Kogi indigenes share N50m food items

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Wednesday granted amnesty to four death-row prison inmates in three South West prisons. The Director of Public Prosecutions and Secretary to the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Mr Pomade Adeniji, announced the amnesty in a statement in Osogbo. The statement said the governor’s gesture was in commemoration of the New Year celebrations. “Pursuant to the advice and recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, in exercise of his powers, has granted amnesty to the prison inmates,’’ the statement said. FRSC cautions motorists over harmattan haze

harmattan haze The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday urged motorists to exercise patience and drive with caution, as the harmattan haze continues in parts of the country. FRSC’s Unit Commander, Ore, Ondo State, Mr Umoru Abdullahi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ore that the advice was necessary because of the foggy weather associated with harmattan. He said that speeding and reckless driving during such a hazy weather could result in road accidents. “Visibility is not clear this time around, especially, in the mornings and at nights, because of the hazy weather we experience due to the harmattan. “I implore motorists to reduce their speed on the highway and put on their headlamps for oncoming vehicles to see them, to avoid road crashes,” Abudullahi said. He urged motorists to adhere to all traffic rules, saying that FRSC personnel were on Sagamu-Ore-Benin expressway to arrest erring road users.

Dozens of Boko Haram fighters surrender in Niger

Boko Haram members Niger Interior Minister on Wednesday said dozens of Boko Haram fighters have given themselves up to authorities in southern Niger, days after the Islamist group suffered key losses over the border in Nigeria. Minister Mohamed Bazoum said that 31 young people from Diffa, who were enrolled a few years ago in Boko Haram, decided to surrender. The fighters arrived in the remote desert town of Diffa in groups and were being held by local authorities. “I learned that the first who surrendered were not arrested, and I surrendered. “We expect a pardon from the government so that we can participate in the development of the country and help us get rid of the trauma,’’ a former Boko Haram combatant told newsmen. In June, tens of thousands of people fled Diffa as Boko Haram swept the region. However five Niger soldiers were killed by the militants near Diffa in September. NAFDAC secures conviction of 8 drug offenders

2 Unilorin students win Society’s scholarship

The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) A postgraduate and an undergraduate student of the Department of Computer Science, University of Ilorin, have won the Nigeria Computer Science Society’s (NCS) scholarship scheme. A statement from the Kwara State Chairman of the Society, Dr Raji Jimoh, on Wednesday, gave the names of the students as Gidado AbdulRauf Aremu, an M.Sc student and Adewunmi Sumayyah-Kikelomo. The statement added that this is the first time that students of the University’s Computer Science would benefit from the NCS scholarship scheme. The value of the award is N450,000 for the postgraduate student and N300,000 for the undergraduate student.

Ghanaian President honours Unilorin Pro-Chancellor

President John Mahama of Ghana The President of Ghana, John Mahama, has conferred Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, the Pro-Chancellor, and Chairman, Governing Council, University of Ilorin, with the Member of the Order of the Volta (MV). This is contained in the university’s current bulletin which said that Okonjo was among 33 people recognized on Oct. 29, for their distinguished services to national development. The bulletin said that the pro-chancellor was honoured for his outstanding contributions to the development of education in Ghana, especially in the field of Population Studies. It stated that Okonjo, a holder of the honours award of the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (OFR), is also the Obi of Ogwashi-Ukwu Kingdom, Delta State. The Lagos State Taskforce says the government has not relaxed the enforcement of the Lagos Road Traffic Law of 2012, warning that its enforcement will be stricter now. Mr Rasak Adebayo, the taskforce’s Public Relation Officer (PRO) told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that the state was more committed to enforcing the law. Adebayo was responding to the delivery of about 300 motorcycles seized by the combined team of the task force and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) during their Tin Can Island operation. Rotimi Akeredolu, Ondo state gov Ondo State Statistician General, Mr Dayo Aregbesola, has blamed the poor coordination of statistical system and activities at the state level on economic recession. Teenager gets N150,000 bail for stealing

court-of-law An Ota Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday in Ogun, granted N150,000 bail to a 19-year-old-man, Yusuff Shorunke, who appeared before it for alleged stealing. In her ruling, Magistrate Adebayo Alebiose asked Shorunke, who allegedly burgled a shop and stole a plasma television and other valuables worth N200,000 to provide two sureties as part of the bail condition. The magistrate added that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed. Alebiose said the sureties should swear to an affidavit of means and must show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government. She said the sureties should submit four recent passport sized photographs to the court and their addresses verified by the police. District Heads to emerge through nomination in Adamawa

Governor Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa State Mubi Emirate Council in Adamawa has announced that henceforth, new district heads in the emirate would emerge through nomination instead of election. FILE PHOTO: A herdsman in Nigeria Former Minister of Information Labaran Maku has urged farmers, herdsmen and other Nigerians to embrace peace in order to achieve national food security. Maku made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in his ancestral home, Wakama, Akun Development Area of Nasarawa State. He advised them to shun violence no matter the level of provocation and unite in the interest of peace and national development. Maku, a 2015 gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Nasarawa state, fielded questions on national stability and growth. Maku, who is also the National Secretary of APGA, also urged herdsmen and farmers in the state to co-exist peacefully. According to him, the persistent herdsmen/farmers crisis in the state is politically engineered to cause confusion along ethnoreligious lines. “I want to congratulate Christians and Nigerians at Christmas and wish them prosperous New Year. “

2 Unilorin students win Society’s scholarship

The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) A postgraduate and undergraduate students of the Department of Computer Science, University of Ilorin, have won the Nigeria Computer Science Society’s (NCS) scholarship scheme. A statement from the Kwara State Chairman of the Society, Dr Raji Jimoh, on Wednesday, gave the names of the students as Gidado AbdulRauf Aremu, an M.Sc student and Adewunmi Sumayyah-Kikelomo. The statement added that this is the first time that students of the University’s Computer Science would benefit from the NCS scholarship scheme. The value of the award is N450,000 for the postgraduate student and N300,000 for the undergraduate student.

Climber falls to death in New Zealand

Mount Aspiring, New Zealand A mountaineer fell several hundred metres to his death at Mount Aspiring in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, police said on Wednesday. “The man, believed to be a tourist fell from the north-west ridge, the most commonly-climbed path to the mountain’s 3,000-metre peak, and onto a glacier,’’ police said. It reported that the climber was a Czech man in his mid-20s. Police, however, had not yet confirmed the man’s identity. It took the volunteer Wanaka Police Search and Rescue three hours to locate and recover the man’s body. Rescue coordinator, Sgt. Aaron Nicholson described the climber’s death as a tragedy. “The very busy start to the summer outdoor season is a sobering reminder of the inherent risks in mountaineering,’’ Nicholson stressed.
