4 soldiers dead in Bayelsa boat accident

Soldiers involved in ‘Operation Crocodile Smile’ Four soldiers attached to the Joint Task Force, JTF, Operation Delta Safe, ODS, who are currently carrying out an operation codenamed ‘Crocodile Smile’, to rid the Niger Delta of criminalities, were on Monday feared dead in the creeks of Bayelsa State. The loss of the security personnel, it was learnt, followed a boat mishap along the Brass Water Front in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa, which led to the troops drowning in the water which was said to have risen to a high level at the time. All the weapons in the possession of the troops at the time of the accident, including service rifles, were also said to be missing. It wasn’t clear why the boat capsized, but it was gathered that during the accident, which occurred about 10am on Monday, many other soldiers were able to swim to safety, though their weapons could not be recovered at the time of this report. Fuel price hike will increase hardship on Nigerians – Senate

Sabi Abdullahi, says that increasing fuel pump price beyond 145 Naira will translate to more hardship on Nigerians. Abdullahi stated this at a news conference in Abuja on Monday, while reacting to the recommendations by former Group Managing Directors (GMDs) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The former GMDs had claimed that the current fuel price cap of N145 per litre of petrol was not in line with current economic realities and called for upward review of the price. INEC: We’re ready to conduct Edo polls

Naira gains marginally at the interbank market

Nigeria’s currency, the naira The Naira on Monday appreciated marginally at the interbank market, gaining N0.57 against the dollar. The Nigerian currency closed at N314.20 from N314.77 it traded at the interbank market on Friday. The Naira, however, dipped three points to N425 at the parallel market, from its Friday rate of N422 against the dollar. Also at the parallel market, it traded at N537 and N465 against the Pound Sterling and the Euro respectively. At the Bureau De Change (BDC) segment of the market, the naira exchanged at N422, N535 and N464 to the dollar, Pound Sterling and the Euro respectively. Traders at the market said that the scarcity of forex was responsible for the poor performance of the naira.

Police nab 16 kidnap suspects in Abia

Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, Governor of Abia State, The Police Command in Abia said it had arrested 16 suspected kidnappers and some suspected armed robbery alleged to have been terrorising residents of the state. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Leye Oyebade, made this known at a news briefing at the command’s headquarters in Umuahia on Monday. He vowed that the command would deal decisively with criminal acts in the state and warned criminals to engage in legitimate business or leave the state. The commissioner alleged that the suspected kidnappers abducted two relatives on Friday in Aba, while the victims were returning from a pharmaceutical shop. He said that the suspects took the victims to their hideout in Uratta, from where they demanded N2 million as ransom. No plan to increase prices of petroleum products – Minister, NNPC

The suspect Kazeem Ugbodaga The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Tanko Abdulateef, a 22-year old house guard who allegedly killed his employer, Mrs Mabel Mba Okafor in Ajah area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria last month. The suspect was alleged to have killed her boss in Ajah on 17 August, 2016. The suspect, who was arrested from his hiding in Bali, Taraba State, was said to have stabbed the victim in the stomach and left her stomach ripped open. 40 killed in Syria bombings

Driver jailed 40 months for causing soldier’s death

The gavel of justice A Jos Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday sentenced a truck driver, Sani Abubakar, to 40 months imprisonment for driving recklessly and causing soldier’s death. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Jovita Binjin, sentenced 40-year-old Abubakar, after he pleaded guilty to the crimes but pleaded for leniency. “I hereby sentence you to 32 months imprisonment for the offence of reckless driving or an option of N28, 000 fine, and eight months imprisonment for the offence of causing death or an option of N8, 000 fine,’’ Binjin said. Abubakar, a resident of Tudun Alaranma, Madawaki Ward, Doma L.G.A. of Nasarawa, was charged with reckless driving and causing death. The driver had told the court: “I did not do it intentionally; my brakes failed me while I was approaching a very busy road. “I tried to control the car and avoid oncoming traffic but couldn’t. Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Folorunsho Folarin-Coker The Lagos State Government (LASG) has advised operators of hotels, hospitality centres and other recreational facilities to register them or face sanction. The state Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, who gave the advice, said the registration would afford the state government to monitor activities at such places. The ministry’s spokesman, Mr Ganiyu Lawal, disclosed that hotels and facilities centres must comply before the end of the year or face sanctions. He said the registration was part of the ministry`s efforts to upgrade the present standards of hotels and hospitality groups in the state to an internationally acceptable standard. He said the exercise would also serve as security-assurance for tourists and users that might want to lodge in them. A building collapsed in a Tel Aviv construction zone on Monday, injuring at least 18 people and trapping three people inside, according to police and media reports. The collapse sent a large plume of dust floating over the area. Officials were trying to determine the cause of the collapse as rescue crews and medical workers converged on the scene. The Israeli military dispatched search-and-rescue units to assist in the efforts. Lior Teherani, a fire official, told Channel 10 TV that the incident began with the collapse of a multi-level underground parking garage being built at the site. Robert Morin A librarian who quietly saved a $4 million fortune, passed away and left his entire estate to the university where he worked for nearly 50 years. Robert Morin, who graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1963 and worked as a cataloguer in Dimond Library, was known to live simply and he loved books, according to the school’s website. In fact, he was such a lover of the bounded written word that he read every book published in the U.S. between 1930 and 1940 in chronological order with some exceptions. The school estimates that by the time he died last year at the age of 77, he had read 1,938 books. The university announced earlier this week that Morin left his entire fortune to the school, earmarking $100,000 to the library in which he worked. Nigerian Army Brigade Commander sells arms to Boko Haram

Prophetess Abiara died on Saturday, according to a statement released by Mrs Eniola, a media aide of Chief Abiara.
