80 killed, 230 wounded in Kabul suicide attack

AFGHANISTAN-PROTESTS/ At least 80 people have been killed and 230 wounded in a double suicide attack at a demonstration in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, according to officials from the public health ministry. The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group claimed responsibility for the blasts, which targeted members of the country’s Hazara minority. Mohammad Ismail Kawousi, a spokesman for the ministry of public health, said the dead and wounded had been taken to nearby hospitals. The IS-linked Amaq news agency said two fighters “detonated explosive belts at a gathering of Shia” in Kabul. The attack in Deh Mazang square targeted thousands from the Shia Hazara minority who were protesting over a new power line, saying its route bypasses provinces where many of them live. CBN directs banks to sell forex to BDCs

Godwin Emefiele, CBN governor The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed agent banks to approved international money transfer operators to sell foreign currency accruing from inward money remittances to licenced Bureau De Change operators (BDCs). The directive is in a circular with reference number, “TED/FEM/ FPC/GEN/01/004, dated July 22, 2016 and posted on its Website’’. The circular by the Acting Director, Trade and Exchange Department, Mr W.D. Gotring, is part of efforts to ensure the stability of the Naira exchange rate. It also said that the decision was to encourage all critical stakeholders to participate in the foreign exchange market. The circular said that all international money transfer operators would be required to remit foreign currency to agent banks for disbursement in Naira to beneficiaries. Fire razes shops at Sabon Gari market Kano

This is the second fire incident in the last four months with the first destroying hundreds of shops and property worth billions of Naira. Eyewitness said the fire, which affected shops belonging to meat, fish and vegetables sellers, started around 5 a.m. Men of the State Fire Service, were however, able to control the inferno before it spread to other parts of the market. When contacted, the State Director of Fire Service, Mustapha Rilwan, said the fire, which started around 5 a.m, destroyed many stalls. “The affected shops were made up of shift but our people were able to put off the fire in time. “The fire was said to have been caused by some people believed to have been cooking in the market.

Suspected ‘coup’ plotter arrested

Mr. Lawal Daura, DSS DG The Department of State Services ( DSS) has arrested one Jones Abari, aka Gen. Akotebe Darikoro, for the alleged mastermind of a hoaxed plan to overthrow President Muhammad Buhari by the military. A statement issued by an official of the service, Mr Tony Opuiyo in Abuja on Saturday said Abari was arrested in Yenagoa on July 21. Opuiyo described the suspect as the leader of the Joint Revolutionary Council of the Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force (JNDLF). He said that Abari had confessed to other criminal activities which included a threat to launch missile attacks on selected targets in Abuja and Aso Rock. Others include writing threat messages to the management of the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) and the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) demanding for N500 million and N250 million respectively. Gov Wike to rebuild burnt INEC office

Governor Nyesom Wike (2nd right) inspecting the burnt INEC office at Bori Okafor Ofiebor/Port Harcourt Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that those who burnt the Bori office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, are the same politicians who wrote to INEC seeking postponement of the rerun elections on grounds of insecurity. The governor ordered immediate re-construction of the burnt building and insisted that the July 30 rerun election date should not be changed. No violence in Imo re-run election

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman The re-run senatorial election for Imo North on Saturday recorded an impressive turnout of voters, some of them arriving at the polling units as early as 7.30 a.m. Agency report revealed that in Isiala Mbano and Okigwe local government areas, INEC officials brought in their materials at 9.45 a.m. amidst heavy police presence. Accreditation commenced at 10 a.m. in some of the polling stations with the card reader in use and functioning. However, at Community Secondary School, Amaraku in Isiala Mbano Ward (1) PU 003, the exercise started by 11.50 a.m. with heavy security presence. The INEC staff in the place attributed the slight delay to logistic challenges. Meanwhile, the exercise has been peaceful and orderly. At PU OO3 Amaku Ihube, the card reader was not working, leaving the voters stranded and confused. The INEC official said they might resort to manual accreditation if the card reader failed to work.

168,843 pupils sit for JSS1 placement test in Lagos

Olayinka Oladunjoye, Lagos State Commissioner for Education No fewer than 168,843 primary six pupils, from both public and private schools in Lagos State, sat for the 2016/2017 placement test into Junior Secondary School I on Saturday. Dr Ganiyu Sopeyin, the Executive Secretary of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), who monitored the exercise at Ilupeju Junior and Senior Grammar School, Ilupeju, told newsmen that the conduct of the test was hitch-free. He expressed satisfaction with the conduct of examination, saying that most of the centres visited were well coordinated and peaceful. He added that this indicated that the government had prepared adequately for the exercise. The boy in chain A nine-year old boy, who was chained and tortured by a Celestial Church in Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria has been rescued by officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Friday. The NSCDC said the nine-year old boy had been chained for weeks by the church, the Celestial Church of Christ (Key of Joy Parish, Ajiwo) at Ajibawo in Ado Odo/Ota local government area of Ogun State.
