Trader jailed 2 years for receiving stolen jewellery

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday, sentenced a trader, Adamu Liman, to two years imprisonment with hard labour for receiving stolen jewellery valued at N3.1 million. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.A. Demi-Ajayi, gave the sentence after Liman was found guilty of the crime of receiving stolen property. “The offence, he is being convicted for, is very prevalent in Lagos State. It has become easy for anyone to steal things and sell them in the market or anywhere without any question. “He does not appear remorseful and had at a time attempted to abscond from the court. He has dragged the court, taxpayers and society back ever since this matter came up in 2010. “The first defendant, who is the principal offender, who stole the jewellery has since pleaded guilty and has served his term, while this accused has sought ways to escape justice. “He cannot expect any empathy from this court. INEC set for Saturday Kogi, Imo legislative re-run polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday expressed readiness for the conduct of outstanding legislative re-run elections in Kogi and Imo. Mr Nick Dazang, Deputy Director, Voter Education and Publicity, INEC, disclosed that the commission had deployed adequate personnel and materials needed for the exercise. “INEC is very prepared for the elections because if we were able to deploy 5,603 personnel as well as all the sensitive and non-sensitive materials, that means we are ready for the exercise. “Remember we had already made proper arrangements for the elections before they were postponed, so, the arrangements are not new. “The commission will deploy 4,105 personnel to conduct elections in Imo North senatorial district and three state constituencies of Isiala Mbano, Oru East and Owerri West. “The area has 390,311 registered voters spread across eight local government areas, with 64 registration areas and 817 polling units. “Also, INEC will deploy 1,498 person

Europe’s medicine watchdog approves preventive AIDS pill

Truvada Europe’s medicines watchdog said Friday it has recommended the licencing of the first-ever AIDS prevention pill for the European Union. Dubbed Truvada, the pill combines two drugs and is already used in Europe and elsewhere in the world as part of AIDS treatment, and is approved in the United States, Kenya and South Africa as a preventive “pre-exposure prophylaxis” or PrEP. Now the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has also “recommended granting a marketing authorisation in the European Union for Truvada… for pre-exposure prophylaxis.” The medicine must be used “in combination with safer sex practices to reduce the risk” of picking up HIV, it added. PrEP is a way for people at high risk of infection—including men who have sex with men, and heterosexual couples of whom one partner has the virus—to lower their chances of getting HIV. Nigeria, Germany sign pact to deepen trade relations

Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and a delegation of German Industry and Commerce (DGIC) have signed a pact to boost trade, investment and knowledge transfer between both countries. This is contained in a statement by Mr Muda Yusuf, Director General of LCCI and made available to newsmen on Friday in Lagos. Yusuf said that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would strengthen the shared interest of reinvigorating the Nigerian-German business relations. The Police on Friday arraigned two men, Toheeb Adesokan,20, and Mutiu Olatinwo, 25, in an Iyaganku Senior magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, for allegedly stealing onions, and other items valued at N100,000. Adesokan, a motorcycle mechanic, and Olatinwo, motor mechanic both residents of Olunde, Aba Baale, Ibadan, were charged on a three- count charge of conspiracy, break-in and stealing. The prosecutor, Insp. Samad Aliu told the court that the defendants allegedly conspired to break into the house of one Funmilayo Ogunsanya on July 16. Aliu alleged that the defendants broke into the house at about 4 p.m. at Olunde area of Ibadan. He said that they stole rechargeable lamp, manual blender, fragile plates, glass cups, electric blender and foodstuffs such as yam flour, rice and onions. Aliu said the total value of stolen items was N100,000, while the offences contravened Section 390 (9), 411 (2) and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State 2000. The Police on Friday arraigned a technician, Stephen John, in a Wuse Zone 2 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, over a missing laptop brought to him for repairs. John, 32, who has a workshop at Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, was alleged to have collected a laptop from one Musa Talba for repairs but failed to do the job. The prosecutor, Christopher Joseph, told the court that Talba, of Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, reported the matter at Wuse Police Station on July 14. He added that John was facing a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating. Joseph said that in May, the complainant gave his Dell laptop to the defendant for repairs and made a payment of N10, 000. The prosecutor added that the defendant did not only fail to carry out the repairs on time as agreed, but also misplaced the laptop. NLC advocates occupational safety health law

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the National Assembly to initiate a new Occupational Safety Health Bill to ensure the safety and health of the Nigerian workforce. The Head of Occupational Health and Safety (OSH), Mrs. Maureen Onyia-Ekwuazi, made the call in Abuja on Friday. She said that the enactment had become imperative to protect workers in case of injury or sickness that might arise in the course of their employment. She said such a bill must be passed into law as soon as possible. Group seeks legislation to sanction governors over unpaid salaries

A group, Aliyu Magatakarda Advocacy Group (AMAG), on Friday, urged the National Assembly to enact a legislation to sanction state governors and local government council chairmen over unpaid salaries. Alhaji Abubakar Yabo, the Secretary of AMAG, in Sokoto said that such law would prevent governors from diverting money meant for salaries to other purposes. He said corruption would be minimised in the country if the three tiers of government accorded priority to the payment of workers’ salaries. Yabo noted that a well paid and motivated civil servant would expose all those behind corrupt practices in the country. He said civil servants were critical to the repositioning of the country for optimal performance. He also called for the provision of decent accommodation for civil servants across the country to ensure productivity.

The kidnapped Oba, Goriola Oseni The kidnappers of Lagos monarch, a first class traditional ruler in Lagos, Oba Yushau Goriola Oseni, the Oniba of Ibaland, demand N500 million ransom. Minister seeks collaboration with Iran on power, agriculture

Hajiya Aisha Abubakar, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Hajiya Aisha Abubakar, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, has called on the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to invest in power and agriculture sectors. Abubakar made the call when Mr. Morteza Zarchi, the Ambassador of Iran in Nigeria, paid her a courtesy visit in Abuja on Friday. “I know that Iran is advanced in nuclear power. “We can use this as an alternative source for energy and train our unemployed people in areas where we can be able to generate or manufacture nuclear power. “Agriculture is also another area we want to diversify our economy; we need tractors, we need our young people to be able to manufacture tractors here,” she said. NGO lauds Appeal Court ruling on Hijab

The Muslims Right Concern (MURIC), an NGO, has commended the ruling by Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal allowing Muslim pupils to dress in the Hijab (veil) as part of their school uniforms. Prof. Ishaq Akintola, the MURIC’s Director, gave the commendation in a press statement on Friday in Lagos. Akintola described the Appeal Court’s judgment as a victory for the rule of law. “This judgment has restored hope in the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, and truth has prevailed over falsehood. “The five judges who sat on the case have also shown that they are principled men of the Bench,” he said. The couple Paul Iyoghojie An Epe-based couple, Abioye Wale Junaid, 41 and his wife, Fausat, 39, aka Iron Lady, have been arraigned before the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court, Igbosere for allegedly obtaining N85m from two businessmen under pretence. They were alleged to have collected the money and promised to facilitate the appointment of the businessmen as a commissioner in Lagos State and as Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria during the 2015 general election. NAFDAC impounds sex stamina drugs worth N15m

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has in its recent operations in Gembu, Taraba impounded unregistered drugs worth N15 million. The impounded drugs included Tramadol and Sildenafil combination. Mr Joseph Asikpo, the state Coordinator of the agency, made this known at a media briefing in Jalingo on Friday. According to him, the drugs were evacuated in 20 sacks and seven cartons from some hidden stores in the area. He said that the Tramadol and Sildenafil combination was an unregistered drug used by people in the area to enhance sexual performance. “The problems associated with Tramadol alone outweigh its benefits because its indiscriminate use causes serious bodily harm. “This is because the drug has an addictive tendency and it is responsible for several violent behaviours we see on the streets today,” Asikpo said. Three men- Ebun Oduyi, 73, Samuel Akinde, 64, and Daisi Abobadi, 41, were on Friday arraigned in an Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State over alleged advanced fee fraud. The accused are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and advance fee fraud. The prosecutor, Insp. Zedekiah Orogbemi told the court that the accused on Dec. 25, 2015, around 4:00 p.m., at Igodan Lisa, along Igbokoda Road, Okitipupa conspired to defraud one Idowu Ayekuseyin. He told the court that the accused acted together, under the guise of being members of Lemikan family, owners of plots of land at Igodan Lisa, and defrauded the victim. Orogbemi said that the accused collected N600, 000 under the false pretence of selling two plots of land to the victim and issued him Lemikan family receipt.
