2 robbers shot dead in Benin

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State Two suspected armed robbers were on Friday afternoon shot dead and another arrested by the Edo State Police Command, Benin City. It was reliably gathered that the four-man robbery gang had trailed their victim (name withheld), who came to Benin from Ughelli in Delta State, to buy a car, to a new generation bank located around Technical Road Junction in the City, where he had ‎gone to withdraw money. The robbers who reportedly came in a grey colour Toyota Corolla car with an Abuja registration number,‎ were said to have gone into the bank with their victim. Unknown to him, as he was coming out of the bank after withdrawing the money, they shot him on the lap after robbing him of N500,000. The robbers thereafter shot sporadically into the air to scare passersby and escape. DSS raid markets for foreign currency hawkers in Anambra

DSS operatives The Department of State Service (DSS) in Anambra on Friday raided some markets in Awka and Onitsha in search of illegal foreign currency hawkers. A trader at the Eke Market in Awka, disclosed that some hawkers of foreign currencies were arrested. He said that the DSS operatives also carted away huge sums of foreign currencies seized from the hawkers. “We scampered for our lives when we saw them inside the market in the early hours of the day because no one knew their mission initially. “They took over the market until later when we were able to find out their mission,’’ he said. Man arraigned for beating father’s tenant

The gavel of justice For allegedly beating up his father’s tenant, Abayomi Shorungbe, 47, was on Friday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. The accused, who works at the Ikeja airport and resides at 8, Ejire Lane, Orile-Agege, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and assault. The prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu told the court that the offences were committed on Oct. 24 at the accused’s residence. Ogu said that the complainant, one Mr. Adewale Adejoro, is one of the tenants of the accused’s father. “Because he hasn’t paid his house rent, the accused hired two soldiers who came to the house and dragged him to an unknown place. “The accused was beaten severally and was made to write a letter of undertaking that he will vacate his apartment by end of year,” he said. INEC issues timetable for outstanding FCT election

INEC The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has issued a timetable and schedule of activities for outstanding councillorship election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) scheduled for Dec. 3. The notice of the timetable was issued in a statement signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu, on Thursday in Abuja. The timetable showed that the conduct of primaries by political parties for the Garki Council Ward election of the Abuja Municipal Area Council ended on Nov. 14. The commission scheduled Thursday, Nov. 17 as the last day for the submission of nomination form while the publication of the list of nominated candidates is Nov. 21. It also fixes Nov. 23 as the last day for the submission of names and addresses of party while the last day for campaigns stands at Dec. 1.

Power outage was caused by system collapse-EKEDC

EKEDC logo The management of Eko Electricity Company (EKEDC) on Friday said that power outage currently being experienced by its customers on Victoria Island and Lekki was caused by system collapse from the national grid. Dozens detained at Istanbul University

Istanbul-university-unrest Police detained 73 academics at Yildiz Teknik University, in Istanbul on Friday as part of an ongoing crackdown in the wake of the July coup attempt by a faction in the military. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said the 73 were part of the 103 academics it issued warrants for as some of the suspects in the last part of the probe. It said their arrest was in part, based on information that the academics had used ByLock, an instant messaging application. The office said that government saw the app as a tool that was used by Gulenists in the period before the coup attempt. The government blames the coup attempt on Fethullah Gulen, a preacher based in the U.S, who was once allied with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and has launched mass arrests and purges of his alleged followers. A 23-year-old man who accidentally fell into a hot spring at Yellowstone National Park and died was dissolved in the boiling acidic waters, according to a report made public Thursday. Colin Nathaniel Scott, of Oregon, had gone to the park in Wyoming with his sister last June to “hot pot” or soak in the thermal pools. He slipped and fell in as his sister filmed the accident on her cell phone, according to a report of the incident obtained from park officials by local news channel KULR under a freedom-of-information request. The gavel of justice A 31-year-old man, Victor Obi, was on Friday charged before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly pouring hot water his neighbour. Obi, who lives at N13, Adekanbi St., Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, is facing a charge of assault. The prosecutor, Cpl. Abdulkareem Mustapha told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct.10 at about 1.30 p.m. along Obasanjo Road, Onipanu, Ota. LG registers 80 new suitors for mass wedding

Jigawa-gov No fewer than 80 suitors have registered in Gwaram Local Government Area to participate in a mass wedding, sponsored by the Jigawa Government. Chinese Shenzhou China’s longest manned space flight returned to earth on Friday after over a month in orbit, local media reported. According to local media report, a capsule with two astronauts on board glided to earth under parachute, landing in grasslands in China’s Inner Mongolia region. Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, Governor of Abia State, Some residents of Umuahia, the Abia capital, have urged the state government to take urgent measures to checkmate the activities of touts. Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, Enugu State Police Commissioner, The Enugu State Police Command on Friday commenced investigations to unravel why one Francis Uzo, 41, had to kill himself after hacking his wife to death in Emene, near Enugu. Radio Mozambique reported Thursday that medical teams were at the scene of the accident in the town of Caphiridzange in Tete province. The radio says dozens of charred bodies were scattered around the explosion site and that government officials believe more bodies might be in surrounding woods. It says a truck driver from Malawi had turned off the main road to sell fuel to local residents, who were gathered around the vehicle when the fuel caught fire.
