Budget Padding: It’s a family affair – APC

Jibrin and Dogara: Allies Torn apart by budget padding scandal The All Progressives Congress (APC) said it would not sanction House of Representatives Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara, or Rep. Abdulmumuni Jibrin over allegations of budget padding in the lower chamber. Deputy National Chairman of the party, Mr Lawal Shuaibu, said this while briefing newsmen at the National Secretariat of the party on Thursday in Abuja. Quoting Article 7, sub-section 5 of APC Constitution, Shuaibu said that the party had the power to do certain things but that whatever was going to be done would not be revealed to the public. He said, “what is padding? The party does not sanction anybody on that. “What concerns us is where any member contravenes the party’s Constitution by his conduct. That is why I refer you to Article 7 sub-section 5 of our party constitution. “We are not a law enforcement organisation; we don’t enforce laws. We only ensure that the Constitution is complied with. “Any member of the pa

Olympics: Kenyan coach expelled for posing as athlete

A Kenyan athletics coach has been sent home from Rio after allegedly posing as an athlete and giving a urine sample. Kenya said sprint coach John Anzrah “presented himself as an athlete” and “even signed the documents” for the doping test. “We cannot tolerate such behaviour,” said Kip Keino, chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya. Anzrah is the second Kenyan official to be sent home over doping issues after track and field manager Michael Rotich. Rotich was dismissed following allegations that he was prepared to warn coaches about drugs tests in return for £10,000. Keino said Kenya’s Olympic body had not facilitated Anzrah’s travel to Brazil, adding: “We don’t even know how he came here.” It was not clear which athlete Anzrah was pretending to be. However, a senior Athletics Kenya source said he had spoken to the athlete, who claims Anzrah used his accreditation purely to obtain free meals from the athletes’ village. “When the anti-doping officials met him, they a

South Africa dethrones Nigeria as Africa’s biggest economy

President Buhari and President Zuma South Africa has regained the title of Africa’s largest economy, two years after Nigeria rebased its economy to claim the spot, according to IMF data. A recalculation using current exchange rates put South Africa on top because the rand has strengthened against the dollar, BBC News reports. Nigeria’s currency has fallen sharply since a peg to the dollar was dropped. Nigeria rebased its economy in 2014 to include previously uncounted industries like telecoms, information technology, music, online sales, airlines, and film production. Most countries do rebasing, updating the measure of the size of the economy, at least every three years or so, but Nigeria had not updated the components in its GDP base year since 1990. On the basis of these numbers, there’s not a lot between the two. South Africa’s economy is worth around $301bn (£232bn) and Nigeria comes in at $296bn. The exercise in calculating the numbers using last year’s IMF figures and thi
