Price of beans soars at Mile 12 Market

Beans The price of 100kg bag of beans at the popular Mile 12 Market in Lagos, has slightly increased from N22,000 to N23,000. The new price regime is contained in a commodity index provided by Novus Agro Nigeria Ltd on Friday in Lagos. Miss Avadoo Gaadi, Enumeration Specialist at the agro firm, attributed the reason for the slight increase to few numbers of farmers planting beans occasioned by inadequate rainfall coupled with high demand for beans. “Our inquiries from beans producing states in the country revealed that last year, few farmers planted beans due to scarcity of rain. “We do not have enough beans in the market right now; and there is high demand for the commodity. “People who have beans in stock are holding on to what they have while those who are willing to sell are giving it out at high prices,’’ Gaadi said. Contractor remanded in Kuje Prison over N2.4b contract scam

efcc logo The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday arraigned one Olugbenga Obadina alongside his company, Almond Projects Limited, before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on an eight-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering to the tune of N2.4 billion. Obadina allegedly collected a sum of N2, 417, 000,000, paid into his company’s account in tranches, between 2013 and 2015 from the account of the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, under Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) without contract award. The offence is contrary to Section 15(2), (d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 as amended in 2012 and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act. Electricity tariff hike: NGO urges caution

I-WIN, an NGO, has called on electricity stakeholders in the country to adopt dialogue to resolve the recent contentious electricity tariff hike. Mr Agbonna Onwumere, the spokesperson of the NGO, made the appeal in a statement on Friday in Abuja. Onwumere was reacting to the Lagos Federal High Court judgment nullifying the increase on the electricity tariff increase announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) from Feb. 1. The court on Wednesday described NERC’s decision to hike electricity tariff as “irrational, irregular and illegal”. The court, therefore, directed the reversal of the electricity tariff and restrained the regulatory body from further tariff increment. The increment generated mixed reactions from electricity stakeholders across the country, including the organised labour and electricity distribution companies. Flood destroys 200 houses in Katsina

No fewer than 200 houses were destroyed by flood at Maibara village in Baure Local Government Area of Katsina State in the current rainy season. Dr Aminu Garba Waziri, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency and Relief Agency (SEMA) disclosed this on Friday. Waziri also put the estimate of property destroyed by flood in the area at N9 million. He said the agency had sent an assessment team to ascertain the extent of the damaged in order to assist the victims, adding the flooding was caused by insufficient drainages. According to him, SEMA conducted Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) on flooding as part of proactive measures to prevent the occurrence of the disaster across the state. He said that was why the state recorded less flooding compared to previous years. Dr Nwabu Mgbemena, former Managing Director, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) The remains of a former Managing Director, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Dr Nwabu Mgbemena, was on Friday interred at his country home, Obosi, in Anambra. Dasukigate: EFCC arraigns Obadina for N2.4bn contract scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned the Managing Director, Almond Properties Ltd., Olugbenga Obadina, in the Federal High Court, Abuja, on an eight-count charge bordering on money laundering. The EFCC arraigned Obadina on Friday for receiving over N2.4 billion from a former National Security Adviser, retired Col. Sambo Dasuki, for electricity contracts that were never executed. The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to all eight counts. The prosecuting counsel, Mr Peters Aso, urged the court to remand the defendant in prison custody and order accelerated hearing of the case. Aso said that even though bail was at the discretion of the court, the proof of evidence accompanying the charges against Obadina, showed that he was not entitled to bail. “The defendant received N2.4 billion out of which $2.6 million has been taken abroad and his passport is still in his custody. “And so, if granted bail, he is a flight risk because he will jet off to enjoy

The University’s Senate on the recommendation of the Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors on Examination Misconduct, ratified the suspension of the 25 students. The students were suspended for failing to appear before the Examination Misconduct Panel set up by the university to consider cases of examination misconduct allegation leveled against them. Man jailed 4 years for burglary

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced a 25-year-old man, Fatunmbi Akeem, to four years imprisonment for burglary and stealing. Akeem, who lives at 33, Iyana Grammar School, Ogunmakin, Owode in Ogun, was charged with burglary, stealing and escape from lawful custody. The Magistrate, Mr Babajide Ilo, sentenced Akeem to four years on each of the three counts, with no option of fine. However, Ilo said the sentence would run concurrently. The Prosecutor, Insp. Famous Edigbue, had told the court that the convict, with others at large, committed the crime on June 15, at about 11 p.m. at Osiele area of Abeokuta. Fuel supply: NNPC re-assures on availability

New Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has re-assured that it has adequate products and urged Nigerians to desist from panic buying.
