3 oil pipeline vandals nabbed in Ebonyi

Commandant-General of NSCDC, Abdullahi Gana The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ebonyi on Thursday announced the arrest of a 20-year-old woman and two men for vandalising oil pipelines. Briefing newsmen in Abakaliki, the Commandant, Mrs Chinwe Kannu, said that the suspects were arrested on Tuesday at Ivo Local Government Area in a border community between Ebonyi and Abia. Kannu said that the suspects were arrested by 5 p.m. by officers of the command on patrol as they scooped diesel from a punctured pipeline. “They will be prosecuted as we are legally mandated by law to do. “Items recovered from them include one 50-litre container of diesel, four 25-litre containers of diesel, buckets, funnels and sieving instruments used to scoop petroleum products,” she said. WAEC releases WASSCE tomorrow

Olutise Adenipekun, Head of National Office of WAEC The West African Examination Council will tomorrow (Friday) release results of the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) taken by over 1,555,000 candidates. The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has revealed that it would release the May/June 2015-2016 results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on Friday, August 5, 2016. The Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Mr. Olutise I. Adenipekun, made the announcement during a media briefing at the council head office Yaba on Thursday. He said the examination which was taken by over 1.5 million candidates across the nation would brighten the chances of candidates in using the results for the on-going university admission exercise. Russian flag Russia’s team for the Rio Games will comprise up to 270 athletes, their Olympic Committee has revealed. A three-member IOC panel has ratified 18 shooters, 11 boxers, 11 judokas, eight tennis players, six sailors, five equestrian riders, three archers and one golfer, among others. The Tass news agency reported Russia Olympic Committee head Alexander Zhukov as saying: “We have documents on the admission of about 270 sportspeople. “We need to do the updated counting.” Russian news agency R-Sport said 29 swimmers and canoeing world champion Andrey Kraitor were also free to compete at the Games. The IOC asked individual federations to decide whether Russians could compete following the country’s doping scandal. Depot manager faces N5m theft charge

A 52-year-old depot manager,Temitope Famugbiyele, was on Thursday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing his employer’s N5 million. The accused, who resides at Abule-Egba area of Lagos, is being tried for stealing. According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah, the accused converted the company’s money to his personal use. He said the offence was committed on January 1 at Abule Egba on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. “The accused was supposed to pay the N5 million to the company which supplied some Coca-Cola products to his employer. “Instead of paying the supplier, the accused converted the money to his own.” The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused pleaded innocence of the offence and was granted a N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum. The Senior Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Gbajumo adjourned the case to Aug. 15 for mention.

South-West attacks: Niger Delta Avengers claims responsibility

Man in court for stealing chickens

A 46-year-old man, Oyelami Tajudeen was on Thursday arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrates Court for alleged theft of N1.2 million chickens. The prosecutor, Insp. Adegoke Taiwo told the court that the accused person committed the offence sometimes between May and July at Erin Osun area, Osogbo. Taiwo said the accused had refused to pay for the chickens sold to him on credit by one Mrs Dorcas Ajibola. He said it took the intervention of the Police to apprehend the accused. Taiwo said the offence committed contravened sections 427 of the criminal code cap. 34 vol.11 Laws of Osun, 2003. The accused person pleaded not guilty to the one count charge of theft. Counsel to the accused, Mr Maruf Adediran, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms. Varsity student kills neighbour with hot water

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday remanded a university student, Mabel Bassey, in prison for bathing her neighbour with hot water and killing him. Bassey is to be remanded at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Bassey, a student of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and resident of Surulere Street, Ojo, Lagos, was arraigned before Magistrate Bola Folarin-Williams on a charge of murder. She was alleged to have poured hot water on Efe Okotie ,38, on July 2 at their residence which resulted in his death. According to the prosecutor, Inspector Olatunde Kehinde, the deceased had advised Bassey to desist from her promiscuous lifestyle which did not go down well with her. “Out of anger, she bathed the late Okotie with hot water. “The deceased died six days after the incident due to the severe burns he suffered from the hot water,’’ he told the court. Police in Nasarawa said eight of its officers of the command had been detained in connection with alleged shooting to death of two persons in the state. Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Abubakar Bello, disclosed this on Thursday in Lafia while briefing newsmen. Bello said the two persons were killed in Lafia during the recent visit of the National President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba, to the state. He said that the case had been taken over by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Police Headquarters for full investigation. He said that the doctor, who conducted autopsy on the two victims “said that one died from injuries sustained from hard object while the other died from a pallet”. The commissioner, however, said that the pallet extracted from the deceased did not match the gun used by policemen stationed at the Government House gate. A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, on Thursday, dissolved a seven-year-old marriage between Helen Jacob and her husband, Jacob over constant insult and beating. The presiding judge, Mr Albert Maga, said all efforts by the court and family members to reconcile both parties had failed as she had insisted on the divorce. “From today, you cease to be husband and wife, this court will rest further deliberations and declare free divorce to both parties,” Maga said. US declares Borno, Adamawa, Rivers, Edo unsafe for citizens

President Barack Obama The United States Government has asked its citizens living in Nigeria to stay away from twenty of the country’s 36 states which it described as unsafe. Man docked for resisting arrest, assaulting policeman

A 34-year-old man, Solomon Sanusi, who allegedly assaulted a policeman in mufti and tore his clothes, has appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State. Sanusi is also charged with resisting arrest and causing a breach of peace at a police station. The accused denied the five-count charge before Magistrate Bola Olagbegi-Adelabu. But the prosecutor, Cpl. Internet users remain at 92m- NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Thursday said that internet users on Nigeria’s telecommunications networks have reduced to 92,281,921, as at June 2016. The commission made this known in its monthly Internet Subscriber Data, which was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. A breakdown of the data showed that internet users on both the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) and the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks reduced by 81,415. It further said that 92,363,336 subscribers surfed the internet in May, but that only 92,281,921 did in June. The data showed that out of the 92,281,921 internet users in June, 92,181,178 were on the GSM networks, while 100,743 users were on the CDMA. Of the 92,181,178 internet users on the GSM networks in the month under review, the document showed that MTN Nigeria had 32,974,177 customers browsing on its network. Business and social life have been paralysed in some communities in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State following a two-month-old power outage. The communities that have been experiencing poor supply or outage are Eputu, Oribanwa, Lakuwe. EKEDC, Yaba residents bicker over estimated billing

The residents of Moore Road Estate, Yaba, Lagos have differed with Eko Electricity Distribution Company(EKEDC) over the continuous delivery of estimated bills to the residents months after prepaid meters were installed for them. The residents have insisted on not making payments for the estimated bills because they did not see the reason why EKEDC would deliver such bills. A correspondent of NAN who visited the area observed that the prepaid meters were installed side by side with the analogue ones. The residents who currently do not pay for recharging their prepaid meters are wondering why the facility has not been inaugurated and they are being given N8,000 monthly. They also told NAN that because they resisted the payment, their estimated bills have now accumulated to about N200,000 to N250,000 per building. Sheik Yusuf Alibawa, a Sokoto state-based Islamic cleric, on Thursday urged intending pilgrims for 2016 Hajj to Saudi Arabia to pray for God’s intervention in the nation’s socio-economic and political activities. Alibawa in Sokoto said that prayers among faithful Nigerian pilgrims will enable the country to overcome its present security and economic challenges. Kano suspends director, sacks 9 officials over fraud

Kano State Government has sacked nine officials of the state Ministry for Local Government over alleged fraud. Similarly, the government has suspended a director with the Ministry of Finance over the same offence. A statement signed by Mustapha Fagge, the Public Relations Officer in the office of the Head of Service, issued to newsmen in Kano on Thursday, also indicated that four officials had been handed over to the police for tampering with pension funds, According to the statement, the nine affected workers and director were indicted in the report of the committee which investigated salary payments in the state. The added that the affected officials would be prosecuted for the roles they played in defrauding the government. Breaking News: Yahaya Bello Floors Faleke at Appeal Court

James Faleke and Yahaya Bello The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Thursday dismissed the suit filed by Mr James Faleke, challenging the election of Mr Yahaya Bello as Kogi State Governor. The 5-man panel of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja ruled that Faleke’s case lacked merit. The appellate court had earlier reserved the judgment after hearing submission from all parties involved in the matter. Channels Tv reports that counsel for Faleke, Akin Olujimi, had urged the Appeal Court to set aside the decision of the Kogi election tribunal and invalidate the election of Yahaya Bello on the ground that Bello was not properly nominated. He submitted that Bello did not undergo all the electioneering processes as required by law before he emerged as his party’s candidate in the re-run election. In his own submission, Joseph Daodu, who is counsel for Governor Bello, insisted that the issue of nomination of candidates for election was the sole responsibility of a political party.

Kaduna Attack: LG boss dissatisfied with security presence

The Interim Council Chairman of Jema’a Local Government, Kaduna State, Dr. Bege Katukah has expressed dissatisfaction with the level of security in communities attacked on Tuesday by herdsmen in Godogodo chiefdom. The chairman, who visited the affected communities on Thursday, noted that in spite of the presence of policemen, there was need to deploy the military to secure the area. Katukah regretted that there was no military presence yet in any of the communities even after much plea to the state government. “The entire communities have been deserted, their houses had been burnt while properties including farms cultivated destroyed,” he said. The chairman, who visited Godogodo, Angwan Ayu, Akwa and Gada Biyu villages, lamented over increasing level of impunity with which the perpetrators carry out their act. He commended the police for repelling the attackers but said it was still important to properly safeguard the area.
