About 1,000 insecticide treated mosquito nets were distributed at the Ile Oduduwa, the Enuowa Palace of the Ooni of Ife, Osun State by the Rotary Club of Omole Golden, supported by District 9110.

The exercise was carried out in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Ile-Ife, The Source, under Rotary International District 9125 as part of efforts to roll back malaria in the ancient Kingdom of Ile-Ife.

At the event, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi threw his weight behind Rotary International for its sundry services to humanity.

Oba Ogunwusi, speaking while flagging off the programme praised Rotary International for being at the fore-front of serving humanity, especially the downtrodden across the globe.

The programme, product of Rotary International global grant, was organised by the Rotary Club of Omole Golden, under District 9110, Nigeria, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Ile-Ife, under Rotary International District 9125.

Observing that health is wealth, Oba Ogunwusi urged his subjects not to sell the specially treated nets, but to use it in the prevention of mosquito bites that would trigger malaria, a scourge ravaging the African continent.

He said: “It is when you are healthy that you can plan, it is when you are healthy that you can look after your family or go to your farm or work. The Rotary International has brought us mosquito nets, they wanted to promote good health and wellbeing. Let us all support them by using the net to prevent malaria. It is when we do this that we are telling them thank you.”

The roll back malaria, Oba Ogunwusi, said is another goody that has come to the ancient town since his assumption of office and thanked Rotary International District 9110 for bringing the roll back malaria to his kingdom.

The District 9110 District Governor, Patrick Ikehloa said the roll back malaria is a global grant programme which the club decided to bring to the ancient town of Ile-Ife as part of ways to associate and support the King, a member of the Rotary Club of Omole Golden, the current best club in the district.

He expressed happiness at seeing that the King is much loved by his subject and prayed for long life and prosperity not only for the King but the people of Ile-Ife.

The Rotarians and other health volunteers also conducted a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) for the detection of malaria, and those who tested positive to malaria were immediately treated and given the mosquito nets.

In her health talk at the event, Rotarian Yemisi Balogun urged the people to always ensure a clean environment in order to be rid of mosquitoes.

She equally counseled against self-medication and the consumption of herbs, many of which she said might ultimately be injurious to their health.

Earlier at a dinner at the Oba’s palace, Ikheloa and other district 9110 leaders had decorated Oba Ogunwusi with appropriate pins as a member of Rotary Club of Omole Golden and a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF).

The Queen, Yeyeluwa Wuraola Ogunwusi was similarly decorated later with the PHF pin by the President Rotary Club of Omole Golden Rotarian Titi Sunmonu.
