Cult groups sign peace pact in Rivers

Some leaders of cult groups and their members in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State have signed a peace pact renouncing cultism, kidnapping, killing and other related crimes.

The repentant cultists also tasked the state governor, Nyesom Wike, to provide them gainful employment.

The cult groups include Green Landers, Niger Delta Freedom fighters, led by Nelly Ngwari, Ice Landers and Ekpeye Liberation Front in Ogbo Community led by General Igbudu.

The cult leaders signed an undertaking for peace in the presence of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Amnesty Programme, Ken Chinda, Special Adviser on Revenue Matters, Harvey Ideozu, the Chairmen of Caretaker Committees, Chairmen of Ahoada East and Ahoada West as well as members of the peace security and reconciliation committee in Ahoada.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Amnesty Programme, Ken Chinda, said this was part of the process leading to disarming genuine repentant cultists and granting them amnesty.

Security watchers are, however, apprehensive that the so-called repentant cultists and cult gangs might go back to their old ways if their case was not professionally handled.

It is not clear yet whether the Rivers State Government has any plan to rehabilitate the so-called repentant cultists.
