A Surulere Chief Magistrate’s’ Court in Lagos on Monday granted bail in the sum of N500,000 to a teenager who allegedly defiled a 12-year-old.
Chief Magistrate Ipaye Nwachukwu also ordered that the accused, 19-year-old Peter Edo, should produce two sureties in like sum.
She directed that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused, while the other must be a community leader or a cleric with evidence of tax payment.
Edo, a resident of Ilogba Road, Ajangbadi, Lagos, was charged on one count, but he pleaded not guilty.
According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, Edo defiled his neighbour’s daughter shortly after she returned from school on Jan. 9 at their residence.
Oyasande submitted that the accused asked the minor to enter his apartment, and had sexual intercourse with her.
She said that the girl later told her parents what happened.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The case has been adjourned till March 7, pending advice of the state director of public prosecutions.
