FG to implement economic policies with human face

Some experts in the oil and gas sector on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to pursue economic policies with human face in 2017. They gave the advice in Lagos.

They said that companies in nearly all sectors of the economy downsized in 2016 due to recession and corruption.

Mr Oluwaseyi Gambo, the immediate past National Public Relations Officer of PENGASSAN, said that Nigerians expected a more dynamic economic team.

“We expect more purposeful economic policies and a more sensitive budget that will at least bring a smile to the faces of the populace as promised by this administration.

“I also expect government to make policies that will force Nigerians to look inward, buy and patronise made-in-Nigeria products, including made-in-Nigeria cars.

“More emphasis should be put on power generation so that our industries can be revived and have capacity to employ millions of Nigerian job seekers.

“If the budget can lay the foundation for these things, recession should soon be a thing of the past,” he said.

Mr Edwin Nwachukwu, the Managing Engineer, Frazimex Engineering Nigeria Ltd., urged the government to look inward and encourage foreign investments into the economy.

“As long as oil and gas continue to be the main stay of our economy, fixing the Niger Delta issues should be a priority to Buhari if revenue from oil is expected to fund any significant part of the 2017 budget.

“The way the government is executing his war on corruption is not helping the economy.

“People with money are not free to invest.

“The anti-corruption agents are constantly harassing perceived wealthy people and making them to buy off the dollars to save their money,” he said.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. It said that Pope was praying for the enlightenment of the hearts and minds of those who were called to promote the common good of the Colombian nation. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court. The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of defilement. Ruling on a bail application filed by the accused, Chief Magistrate Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
