Truck driver docked over alleged killing of pedestrian

Magistrate-court

A 28-year-old truck driver, Ralmon Ahmed, who allegedly knocked down and killed a man, was on Thursday granted N100,000 bail.

An Ikeja Magistrate’s’ Court granted the bail, but ordered the accused to produce two sureties.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Alexander Komolafe, also ordered that one of the two sureties must be a civil servant on Grade Level 9 in Lagos State with evidence of three years tax payment as part of the bail conditions.

Komolafe adjourned the case until Jan. 16, 2017 for mention.

Ahmed, a resident of Onibuku area, Atan-Ota in Ogun, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of dangerous driving and manslaughter.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Joseph Ajebe, had told the court that the accused drove a Man-Diesel truck with registration number TFD 793 XA dangerously and caused the death of a 35-year-old man, Olayiwola Bolaji.

“The accused, who was driving dangerously without care or caution, knocked down the victim at about 3.00 p.m. along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, Alakuko, Lagos.
“The victim was immediately rushed to Ota General Hospital in Ogun by traffic personnel who were at the scene of the accident.”

Ajebe said the victim was later referred to Orthopaedic hospital in Yaba, Lagos, due to the degree of injury he suffered, but died on his way to the hospital.

“The body was deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), mortuary, Ikeja,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said that the driver committed the offences on Nov. 30 in contravention of Sections 7 and 19 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Houthis’ Justification In their statement, the Houthis framed the attack as retaliation for Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which they characterized as indiscriminate bombings resultin...

This article delves into why Assad’s downfall would strike at the core of Russian prestige and what it could mean for the broader geopolitical landscape. Russia's Strategic Commitment to Syria Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Russia has been a staunch supporter of Assad's regime. In 2015, Moscow launched a military intervention that proved decisive in stabilizing Assad’s hold on power. This intervention solidified Russia's role as a key power broker in the Middle East and demonstrated its willingness to project military power far beyond its borders. Syria is not just an ally for Russia; it is a...
