Gov Mimiko free to return to Labour Party, says party leader

Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State

Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State

Mrs Ladi Iliya, the Deputy National Chairman of Labour Party (LP), says Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State is free to return to Labour Party.

Iliya made the offer in an interview in Akure on Monday.

Mimiko was elected Ondo State governor under the platform of the Labour Party in 2007 and 2012, but defected to Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) on Oct. 3, 2014.

Iliya, who did not say whether Mimiko had shown interest to return to Labour Party, described the governor as a “politician of repute.’’

“The governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, and his followers are free to come back to Labour Party.

“Gov. Mimiko is a person to be reckoned with politically and he is free today if he decides to come back to Labour Party.

“Nobody will stop him because he has contributed his quota to the party and he has worked in Ondo State as governor under the Labour Party.

“Whether we like it or not, when we write the history of Ondo State and the performance of Gov. Mimiko, the Labour Party will be mentioned,” she said.

Iliya said that the defection of the governor from Labour Party was not personal, but it was the decision of the majority of his followers.

“When we talk of politics, some people do not look at the party. Some look at the person and it is what your people want you to do that you do.

“As far as lam concerned, l will not blame Gov. Mimiko for leaving our party for another party because he did not go there as a person.

“It was the same group of people who asked him to contest under the Labour Party that also asked him to go to another party,’’ she said.

Iliya said the party had put in place mechanism to win the Nov. 26 governorship election in the state and the 2019 general elections.

The deputy national chairman, who said that the party had a large membership in Ondo State, also said those who left the party would return soon.

“Labour Party in Ondo State is waxing stronger. Just give us from now till the next election, people will be surprised by our performance,’’ she said.

Iliya commended the Labour Party in the state for conducting peaceful, free and fair governorship primary.

FG berates US congressman over comment

Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture Photo: Femi Ipaye/PM News The Federal Government has described as sadly out of tune with reality the published letter from US Congressman Tom Marino to Secretary of State John Kerry, asking the US to withhold security assistance to Nigeria on the strength of some imaginary infraction by the Buhari Administration. In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said Congressman Marino was poorly informed about the issues he commented on, wondering why he did not take the pains to get first hand information from the US Embassy in Nigeria or any other credible source before engaging in what is nothing but a ‘propaganda of his own imagination’. The Minister said by asking the US to refrain from selling warplanes and other military equipment to Nigeria based on a faulty premise, the Congressman has demonstrated a poor understanding of global security issues. ”Insecurity anywhere i

Aubameyang leads Gabon to Nations Cup

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leads the cast for Gabon as the hosts became the first team to name their final 2017 Africa Cup of Nations squad. The team captain and Borussia Dortmund star will lead the home players out for the opening game of the tournament against debutants Guinea-Bissau on 14 January in Libreville. Gabon have also named Sunderland midfielder Didier Ndong despite the player being left out of November’s World Cup qualifier in Mali. Ndong was in the capital city Libreville but failed to turn up for international duty ahead of the Mali game last month, forcing the Gabonese Football Federation [Fegafoot] to send him back to England. But a remorseful Ndong, who held clear-the-air talks with Fegafoot has been included in a 23-man Panthers squad. Other names to make the final party include Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina, Bruno Ecuélé Manga of Cardiff City and China-based striker Malick Evouna.
