Woman nabbed for phone theft

Magistrate-court

A 21-year-old woman, Abidemi Omotowon, who allegedly stole a phone worth N10,000 and N10,000 cash, was on Thursday released on bail on the orders of a Surulere Chief Magistrate’s’ Court in Lagos.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, who gave the ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N10, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Nwachukwu said the surety should provide evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

The accused, a resident of No. 12 Araromi Oke-Ode St., Orile-Iganmu, Lagos is facing a four-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.‎

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge preferred against her.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offences at No. 12 Araromi Oke-Ode St., Orile-Iganmu, Lagos at about 5.00 p.m on Dec. 14.

‎She alleged that the accused who lived in the neighbourhood with the complainant, Oluwakemi Amadi, walked a friend out of the street and before her return, the accused had entered her apartment and stolen a Nokia phone valued at N10,000 and N10,000 cash.

The accused, who was seen by neighbours, told the complainant that she was seen around her premises.

When the complainant went to the residence of the accused, the items were not found but a Tecno phone was found in her custody, reasonably suspected to have been stolen, as the accused could not give a proper account of the phone.‎

The offences contravened Sections 285(1), 285(1), 306(1), and 327(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The magistrate adjourned the case to Jan. 8, for mention.

Fall of Assad is a Blow to Russia's Prestige

The potential fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a long-standing ally of Russia, would mark a turning point in Moscow’s global influence, particularly in the Middle East. Steve Rosenberg’s analysis underscores the profound implications for Russia, which has invested heavily—both militarily and politically—in ensuring Assad’s survival over the past decade. This article delves into why Assad’s downfall would strike at the core of Russian prestige and what it could mean for the broader geopolitical landscape. Russia's Strategic Commitment to Syria Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Russia has been a staunch supporter of Assad's regime. In 2015, Moscow launched a military intervention that proved decisive in stabilizing Assad’s hold on power. This intervention solidified Russia's role as a key power broker in the Middle East and demonstrated its willingness to project military power far beyond its borders. Syria is not just an ally for Russia; it is a...
