Unemployed thief bags N50,000 bail

An unemployed man, Chukwukere Akachukwu, who allegedly broke into an apartment and stole N108,000, was on Friday in Lagos granted N50,000 bail.

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court directed the accused to provide two sureties in like sum who must be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.

The 35-year-old accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of burglary and stealing.
‎According to the Prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, the accused committed the offences at No. 14, Yomi Are St., New Oko-Oba, Abule-Egba, Lagos, at about 10.30 p.m on Nov.14.

He alleged that the accused burgled the apartment of the complainant, Mr Ogbolu Stephen.
Egunjobi told the court that the accused broke into the complainant apartment through the window while he was on night shift.

“The accused was seen by the complainant’s neighbour who went outside to urinate and raised alarm.
‘Akachukwu was apprehended by security guards in the area and handed over to the police,” the prosecutor said

The offences contravened Sections 285 and 305 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.‎ The Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Osinbajo, adjourned the case to Nov.8 for trial.
