Rivers rerun election: Politician advocates peaceful conduct

Chief Ambrose Owuru, the presidential candidate of Hope Democratic Party, has called for peace and order during Saturday’s legislative rerun elections in Rivers.

Owuru made the call on Friday in Port Harcourt while speaking to newsmen on his expectations from the elections scheduled for Dec. 10.

The politician said it would be counterproductive for political parties to indulge in violence and irregularities in a bid to win elections.

According to him, elections should be held on a level playing field to enable the votes of electorate to count.

“I want to see an election full of honesty and decency.

“I want to see a situation where the election will come and go without violence, I want to see people living in peace after the elections,’’ he said.

He called on youths in the state to avoid being used by anybody to foment crisis during the elections.

Owuru said that electoral victories achieved through violence and irregularities would not translate into good governance.

“Until we realise that the essence of elections is to put our collective wealth in the hands of people, we may not get it well.

“When we realise this, then we will be careful during elections, in order not to give the wrong people our mandate,’’ the politician said.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks.
