Police foil attempt by Niger Delta militants to blow up Lagos 3rd Mainland Bridge

One Abiodun Amos, suspected to be leading a group of militants planning to bomb the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, has been arrested by the police.

The Police Spokesman, DCP Don Awunah, said in a statement in Abuja on Thursday that arms and ammunition recovered in connection with the crime are; two cartons of explosive devices, 125 detonators and two AK 47 rifles.

Awunah said that the Intelligent Response Team (IRT) of the police arrested the suspect through the use a technical platform of the force before he and his gang could carry out the heinous crime.

He said the 43-year-old militant leader also known as Senti was arrested on 2nd November, at a hideout at the bank of Majidun River in Ikorodu Area of Lagos State and the two AK 47 rifles were recovered from him.

Awunah said: “The principal suspect is an Ijaw man and a native of Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

“He is an Explosives specialist who specialises in assembling and modifying large scale Improvised Explosives Devices (IED) for terrorist act.

“The suspect also volunteered confessional statement to the Police and named other members of the militant group that are still at large.

“In the course of further investigation into the case, one of the suspects at large mentioned to the Police by the principal suspect as the person in possession of their explosive devices was trailed.

“The detonators were trailed by the IRT operatives on Dec.26, 2016 while being conveyed in a Toyota Camry Car.

“Two Cartons of Galantine Dynamite Explosives and 125 Detonators in the boot of the Car in a location in Ikorodu Area of Lagos state were discovered.

“The suspect was on his way to link up with the other members of the militant gang to blow up the 3rd mainland bridge.

“The suspect, on sighting the intelligence response team operatives jumped out of the Car and escaped into the nearby bush.”

Investigation is still on to arrest all the other members of the militant gang still at large, the police spokesman said.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court.
