Pageantry originated from the bible -Beauty Queen

Miss Ayanfe Falana, the “Most Beautiful Girl, Eko 2016’’ on Tuesday said that the role of a beauty queen was a multi-tasking job that required energy, courage and determination.

Falana, at the 40th Miss Nigeria Beauty Pageant, said that there was more to being a beauty queen.

Miss Nigeria Pageant is organised by the Daily Times of Nigeria (DTN) in partnership with many organisation and the media.

The pageant show held at the Eko Hotel and Suite, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The beauty pageant which commenced in 1957 had been an important event since then for both young and old and has attracted young female participants across the country.

Commenting, Falana, said that the beauty pageant ceremony was just the climax of all the trainings, orientations and weeding tests that the contestants went through.

“It takes a lot to be a Miss Eko, it transcends the beauty queen that people assumed it to be. First, before winning you must exhibit what you have inside of you.

“Beauty queen is a combination of beauty and brain, because you have to be a motivator, a well composed person who could inspire people and that is why we are asked to make speeches.

“As a beauty queen, you have to be polite which tells a lot of what is inside of you; one must be courageous and have a good understanding about the society.

“Beauty queen role above all must be a good role model; no scandal should be heard because our lives are in the mirror and the eyes of the world,’’ she said.

She added that being crowned as a beauty queen did not interfere with the individual’s education pursuits.

“The insinuation that beauty queens do drop out from school is a wrong one instead it is complementary. It is only some people that became intoxicated by their reign that does that.

“Dropping out of school because you are a beauty queen is not the way to go. Beauty queen role should bring the best in people and not the other way round.

“Education is for the future, while the reign as a beauty pageant is momentary; education is the key to maintaining fame because money made from the beauty pageant is momentary.

“This formed our decision to properly advise young ones on the essence of education as the only key to sustaining a better life for them and not momentary gains,’’ she said.

Falana stressed that a beauty queen was also a counselor of sort for budding beauty pageant talents.

“I have a lot of roles to play which includes going to schools to give talk to students and advising them on a pathway to success.

“I also advise parents too on the need to allow their children to follow the career path they might have chosen.

“We have had some misconceptions about the pageant shows as a class for the societal cast outs.

“This should not be because pageant shows even takes its origin from the bible.

“The first pageant show recorded was an account of Esther. So the history of pageant show is as old as itself, so there is no need of downplaying the show,’’ she said.

Fire: UniJos Senate convenes emergency meeting on Monday

Fire at the University of Jos Library University of Jos is to convene an emergency senate meeting on Monday to review the level of damage done to the institution by the Saturday night inferno.
