Lagos trains 200 workers on risk management

L-R: Assistant Director, Training Depth, Lagos State Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions, Mrs. Bibilomo Olushekun; Managing Director/CEO, Vitech Trainers Limited, Mr. Olalekan Okediji and Director, Human Resources, Vitech Trainers, Mrs. Titilope Akomolafe, during the opening a 3-day specialized training programme for Lagos State public servants.

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday flagged-off the training of 200 of its workers on risk management in order to enhance efficiency and productivity in the public service.

Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Benson Oke, who flagged off the three days training at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCCI, Ikeja, in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria said the objective of the specialized training was to leverage on a deep understanding that public service delivery was more than just about the ‘bottom line.’

Oke said the training, which is on “Mastering Risk Assessment and Optimal Risk Management based on ISO 31000 and ISO/IEC 31010,” was timely because of the current administration’s focus on accountability and transparency which had prompted a renewed focus on risk and controls.

“In addition, recent high-profile financial failures have also focused increased attention on risk and controls. This foresight is geared towards the move by the Ambode administration of making Lagos safe and secure as a prime destination for international trade.

“Risk management is not a new concept within government sector; what is new is the need to integrate risk management into the strategic and decision-making process that cut across the organisation and abandon the outdated practice of managing risks within functional silos and stovepipes. In addition, these values have to be strict adherence to international best practices, the ISO standard,” he said.

Oke added that the course would use service improvement techniques used by large global corporations to show how they could be used and add real value in the public sector, saying also that the course would show what excellent public services of the future could and should be like.

According to him, the specialized courses had been tailored to suit the need of Lagos State Public Service to ensure that senior officers and policy makers across different levels of government could plan, introduce and evaluate the most up to date modernization thinking in service delivery.

Managing Director, Vitech Trainers and facilitator, Olalekan Okediji said the training would equip civil servants with the necessary tools on risk management and exposed the civil servants to the best international practice.

Assistant Director, Establishment and Training, Bibilomo Olushekun said the essence of the training was to equip the staff to be productive and embrace the best practice in risk management.

Fall of Assad is a Blow to Russia's Prestige

The potential fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a long-standing ally of Russia, would mark a turning point in Moscow’s global influence, particularly in the Middle East. Steve Rosenberg’s analysis underscores the profound implications for Russia, which has invested heavily—both militarily and politically—in ensuring Assad’s survival over the past decade. This article delves into why Assad’s downfall would strike at the core of Russian prestige and what it could mean for the broader geopolitical landscape. Russia's Strategic Commitment to Syria Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Russia has been a staunch supporter of Assad's regime. In 2015, Moscow launched a military intervention that proved decisive in stabilizing Assad’s hold on power. This intervention solidified Russia's role as a key power broker in the Middle East and demonstrated its willingness to project military power far beyond its borders. Syria is not just an ally for Russia; it is a...
