Audience, judges to pick new Miss Nigeria

With a day to the grand finale of the 40th Miss Nigeria contest, the organisers have automated the voting process for this year’s edition, offering the audience chance to determine who wears the crown.

The organisers, Daily Times of Nigeria (DTN), said in a statement on Sunday in Lagos that the innovation allowed the audience to vote for their favourite contestant during the show.

“The result collated alongside those of the Judges, gives a clear and fair chance to the contestants,’’ it stated.

“To take part in the voting process and also experience the glitz and glamour of the event, tickets are obtainable for N5000 or N10,000 at Eko Hotel and Suites.

“Tickets can also be obtained online at www.aryatickets.com for a 50 per cent discount.

The statement said that there would be the unveiling of the Green Girl Project, a fashion show, music, and dance and so much more at the event planned for the Eko Convention Center, Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

There will be theatrical appearances with a special musical performance by PANA Crooner Tekno as Nigerian ace comedian Ayo Makun a.k.a. AY and Nollywood trailblazer and producer Lala Akindoju will be hosts for the evening.

This prestigious event holds at 7.30 p.m. with the Red and Green carpet billed for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the statement said.

It will be recalled that Lessi Peter-Vigboro won the 39th Miss Nigeria.

The Miss Nigeria 2016 pageant is powered by Daily Times of Nigeria Newspaper and sponsored by The Federal Ministry of Environment, Information and Culture, Pinnacle, Pathcare Nigeria and Zaron Cosmetics.

Others are Sari Signature, Powerhorse, Heritage Bank, Eko Hotel and Suites, Quilox, Arik Air, Air France, Ecobank, NEPC, Shell, L’Avyanna Skin Naturals, Eventful, Edo State Government, Rivers State Government.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. It said that Pope was praying for the enlightenment of the hearts and minds of those who were called to promote the common good of the Colombian nation. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court. The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of defilement. Ruling on a bail application filed by the accused, Chief Magistrate Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
