Mr Kayode Ibrahim, the engineer supervising section one of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reconstruction/rehabilitation contract, by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, said that the project was 32 per cent completed.

Ibrahim told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that work had been completed on one section of the Long Bridge and on various critical sections.

NAN reports that section one of the projects is from Ojota in Lagos to Sagamu Interchange and is being handled by Julius Berger.

He said that more warning signs and crash barriers had been deployed to the highway to ensure a free flow of traffic and check accidents.

“We will complete the repair of the long bridge by Dec. 15 and we will complete all palliatives to make the road motorable before the Yuletide.

“The entire project is 32 percent completed. We have done earthworks, laid asphalt and base course, done culverts and drains on various changes between Redeemed Camp and the Sagamu Interchange.

“We have constructed trapezoidal drains, rectangular drains and retaining walls on various portions and also laid polymer modified asphalt on various shoulders. We are working massively on various portions,” he said.

NAN correspondent on inspection of the highway with the inspection team of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, reports that the highway is free from the usual traffic logjam as at press time.

NAN reports that tack coat (binding material for asphalt) was being laid on a portion of the outer lane of the popular Long bridge.

Earthworks and laying of asphalt were also ongoing at various points as the committee members made intermittent stops to raise questions.

Pope not involved in Colombian peace deal- Vatican

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Vatican in a statement issued on Wednesday in in Vatican City said that an invitation was sent to his Holiness in early August to appoint a representative to participate in the committee that selected the judges for the talks. The statement said that though Pope Francis supported the peace process, he, however, reiterated that he would not get involved in Colombian peace deal. Man docked for defiling 9-year-old girl

magistrate-court A 33-year-old man, Godwin Otobo, was on Monday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.For allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, ‎Otobo, who lives at No. 10, Borrow Pit St., Sangotedo-Ajah area of Lagos, was said to have defiled the underage girl whose parents also reside in the same compound. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 9.00 p.m. sometimes in September. “The accused defiled the girl in the night when she was fetching water.‎ “The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,’’ Osayande told the court. The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of defilement.
