The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has alerted residents in Borno over the activities of vehicle thieves during social occasions.
Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Commandant of the NSCDC in Borno, issued the alert on Wednesday in Maiduguri while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Abdullahi said criminals and other bad elements now target innocent sympathizers at burial grounds and other social gatherings to steal vehicles.
He said the command had received not less than 10 cases of car and tricycle theft at the Gwange burial ground in Maiduguri within a week.
“These criminals always target people who are carried away with the loss of their loved ones during the time of burials at the graveyards.
“And you know no one will ever imagine a thief going to steal from the dead. Do you know even at the grave where people are been buried, you will still find phone snatchers and pickpockets.
“This is very disheartening; the hoodlums are taking advantage of the less presence of security operatives at burial grounds.
“We have so far mapped out proactive modalities toward curtailing such kind of perpetrators and we also urge the people to always expose scrupulous elements causing havoc in the society,’’ the commandant said.
