The Principal of Day Secondary School Bari Kinsale, Minna, Hajia Hajara Mohammed, has urged parents to resist teenage marriage in order to curtail the incidence of Vesico Virginal Fistula (VVF) disease.
Mohammed said this in Minna on Friday.
She noted that teenage marriage was prevalent among out-of-school girls in the state.
“A girl child that is not up to 18 years is vulnerable and should not be married out because some of them at childbirth come down with VVF.
“These categories of females are dumped by their husbands while some of them don’t have money to go into minor or major operations.”
Mohammed said that the situation the teenage girls suffering from VVF found themselves was very deplorable and made their husbands to abandon them.
She emphasised that mothers should be cautious of the inherent dangers of marrying off their teenage girls early and chart a better course for them.
“Mothers should strive to ensure that their girl child attained 18 years of age before going into marriage.”
Mohammed further explained that the consequence was risky both in the short and long run, adding that a rethink would save the teenage girl from childbearing diseases.
