The Borno State Police Command has expressed shock over allegations of sexual abuse of girls and women by officials guarding Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the state.

In its latest report, Human Rights Watch, an NGO, alleged that officials guarding IDPs camps in Borno sexually abuse young girls and women.

Reacting to the report while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Maiduguri, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Damian Chukwu, expressed reservation over the authenticity of the report.

“We have not received any complain or report from any IDP camp on the issue, so the whole thing is strange to me.

“Since I assumed office a few months ago, I have constantly been monitoring situations in the camps; I have never received such report,”he said, adding that the police would investigate the issue to find the truth.

“We are going to investigate the matter; we are going to get to the root of the matter to ensure justice.

“We are also going to introduce new measures that are only known to us to prevent future re-occurrence of such things if it is true, “he added.

Meanwhile, the Borno State Government had indicated its plans to collaborate with security agencies to investigate the issue.

Gov. Kashim Shettima made the announcement when he received members of the National Universities Commission (NUC) who paid him a courtesy visit in Maiduguri.

Malam Isa Gusau, Special Adviser to Shettima on Communication stated this in a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday in Maiduguri.

Gusau said that Shettima intended to write letters to heads of security agencies in the country to post undercover agents to investigate the authenticity of the allegation.

FG berates US congressman over comment

Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture Photo: Femi Ipaye/PM News The Federal Government has described as sadly out of tune with reality the published letter from US Congressman Tom Marino to Secretary of State John Kerry, asking the US to withhold security assistance to Nigeria on the strength of some imaginary infraction by the Buhari Administration. In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said Congressman Marino was poorly informed about the issues he commented on, wondering why he did not take the pains to get first hand information from the US Embassy in Nigeria or any other credible source before engaging in what is nothing but a ‘propaganda of his own imagination’. The Minister said by asking the US to refrain from selling warplanes and other military equipment to Nigeria based on a faulty premise, the Congressman has demonstrated a poor understanding of global security issues. ”Insecurity anywhere i
