Nasarawa governor bans road blocks by LGs

Gov. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has directed all the local government councils in the state to desist from mounting road blocks on roads for the purpose of revenue collection.

The governor gave the directive on Thursday in Lafia during a meeting with Interim Management Committee (IMC), chairmen and stakeholders of local government and development areas.

He said the ban was to ensure compliance with Federal Government’s directive on the dismantling of road blocks on the nation’s highways.

Al-Makura urged the chairmen to come up with initiatives of generating internal revenue for the survival of the local government system in the state.

“As leaders at the local government level, it behooves on you to live up to your responsibility by adopting measures that would ensure the survival of the system given the dwindling allocation from the federation account,” he said.

He said that the government was working on a benchmark of the expected Internally Generated Revenue from each local government and development area in the state.

The governor charged Directors of Personnel in Development Areas to be submissive to the newly appointed Overseers as their executive head for effective service delivery.

Sulieman Wambai, IMC chairman for Lafia local government area, who spoke on behalf of others, assured the governor of full compliance with the directive.

Pope Francis Pope Francis has turned down a request to play a role in the peace deal between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group.
