NAFDAC donates gift items to secondary schools in Imo

NAFDAC on Wednesday donated gift items to six winners of the 2015/2016 NAFDAC Consumer Safety Clubs (quiz competition) in secondary schools in Imo.

Donating the gift items at a ceremony in Owerri, the Imo State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr. Mmamel Victor, said NAFDAC Consumer Safety Club was established by the agency to further extend its public enlightenment and sensitization activities to Nigerians.

Winners of the competition emerged from Logos International Secondary School, Awo-omma; Federal Government College, Okigwe; and Owerri Girls Secondary School.

The other schools where the winners of the competition emerged include Alavana Model Secondary School, Owerri; Federal Government Girls College, Owerri; and Holy Ghost College Owerri.

Victor said the duties of members of the club was to inform, educate and enlighten the people in a bid to promote a healthy culture and proper usage of drugs with a view to preventing drugs misuse and abuse.

He said members of the clubs helped to circulate bulletins, organize workshops as well as sensitisation and public health talks to enlighten the public on the activities of NAFDAC that they should know.

The coordinator said for the eradication of fake, unwholesome, sub-standard drugs, packaged foods and other consumables to be successful, every Nigerian should join NAFDAC in the campaign.

He explained that the agency decided to establish NAFDAC consumer safety clubs in schools to locate the students in the forefront of the campaign to educate other students on the dos and don’ts of the agency.

He stated that if the younger ones understand what constitutes the danger in the abuse of drugs and other consumables and extend the messages to their parents and friends, Nigerians will be safer.

Mrs. Helen Nwachukwu, the Imo State Coordinator of NAFDAC Consumer Safety Club, explained that the quiz competition, which was held in Sept. 2015, was for participants in both junior and senior categories.

Nwachukwu expressed appreciation to teachers and students of the institutions for participating in the quiz competition.

She urged more schools in the state to join the club.

Speaking on behalf of winners of the competition, Mrs. Ijeoma Mbama, a tutor at Alavana Model Secondary School, Owerri, described the club as very important to every Nigeria.

“The information you acquire from NAFDAC club can save your life and that of many others, because through this platform, you can have access to a lot of information that will help prevent you from danger,” Mbama said.

NAN reports that Logos International Secondary School Awo-omma took the first position in the senior category, while Holy Ghost College Owerri and Alavana Model Secondary School

Owerri came second and third respectively.

Fire: UniJos Senate convenes emergency meeting on Monday

Fire at the University of Jos Library University of Jos is to convene an emergency senate meeting on Monday to review the level of damage done to the institution by the Saturday night inferno. NDLEA arrests 252 suspects, seizes 3,073 kg Indian hemp

NDLEA operatives The NDLEA in Niger on Monday said that it had arrested 252 suspects and seized 3,073.9 kilogramme of Indian hemp(cannabis sativa) in the state. The NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr Joseph Iweajunwa, who disclosed this in Minna, said that the operations were carried out between January and September. “Our operations in Niger State from January to September 2016 led to the arrest of 252 suspects and seizure of 3,073.997 kilogramme of cannabis sativa,’’ he said. Iweajunwa said that within the period, the agency also seized 1, 530 litres of liquid drugs, especially cough syrup with codeine. He said the NDLEA also counselled and rehabilitated 90 drug addicts in the state within the period under review.
