Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, Sultan of Sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III marks 10 years on the throne, the Muslim Media Watch Group has commended him for promoting national unity and peace.

The group, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, on Thursday in Abuja, said the Sultan had offered purposeful leadership which made him a pride of the Muslim Ummah.

The group said that the Sultan, who is also President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), had undertaken tours of virtually all states in Nigeria solely to promote unity, peace and stability in the country.

“Since assumption of office, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has scaled-up the level of traditional leadership by being selfless, committed, dedicated and responsive to the yearnings of the people.

“He has undertaken tours of virtually all states in Nigeria with the sole aim of promoting unity, peace and stability in the Nation.

“Just recently, the Sultan demonstrated his uncommon concern for unity irrespective of religious affiliations by moving to Benin City for three days.’’

According to the group, he did not only witness the coronation of the new Oba of Benin Kingdom, but also organised a Durbar to mark the event.

The group noted that the Sultan had visited Yoruba and Igbo lands several times spreading the message of peace as practiced by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“In order to project the Nation’s good image, the Sultan engages in international trips to brief the Governments and people of other countries on the good works the present administration is doing.

“He embarks on rebuilding and refocusing Nigeria for economic viability and industrial development, in addition to fighting corruption.

“In his efforts to promote religious tolerance, the Sultan has, from time to time, organised and promoted inter-religious dialogue to educate people about the fact that we are all from only one God.’’

According to the group, the Sultan has consistently used his personal wealth to care for the physically challenged, the poor, women and children.

“The Sultan’s contributions to the welfare of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) remain unquantifiable.

“He is establishing a Special University for Women in Nigeria with focus on all areas of knowledge and bias for medical sciences.

“Muslims have been worried about the low percentage of educated women especially in the field of medical sciences in spite of their high population in this country.

“Training of a large number of women in medical sciences will bring medical care to the populace and promote moral rectitude in the society in line with Islamic injunctions.’’

The group prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the Sultan long life and sound health to contribute more meaningfully to the progress and development of Nigeria, Africa and the world.

Activities to mark the Sultan’s 10-year Coronation Anniversary began in Sokoto on Nov. 2.
