The Borno Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday said it had trained about 400 tricycle operators to reduce the rate of road accidents in the state capital.
The state Commandant of the FRSC, Mr Shehu, stated this in Maiduguri.
Shehu vowed to arrest underage tricycle operators and commercial vehicles drivers, saying such persons were constituting a lot of nuisance on the roads.
He also decried consumption of illicit drugs by tricycle operators, saying the trend was posing danger to passengers and the drivers themselves.
“The greatest challenges of the command since I came on board in February 2016 are the lawlessness and nonchalant attitude of tricycle operators. A lot of them are not even fit to ply the roads.
“The town is overstretched and everybody wants to ride “Keke” ,that is why about 98 per cent of its operators do not have driver’s licence.
“Most of them just join the business because they want to start doing something.
“Our concern remains with parents who send their children to school on an overloaded Keke Napep without thinking of the consequences of such action.
